This Chick Read: The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon

This novel has been on my shelf for a couple of months and after the 10th appearance on a Best Of list, I was motivated to read it, finally. I found it to be  charming, sweet, funny, interesting and magical. Needless to say, I was not disappointed at all.

This book about two high school kids who meet by chance in New York put my own rather average adult life in perspective. As Daniel wondered about the chain of events that gave him the courage to approach Natasha, I thought about all of my own decisions that led to major events in my life. How if I had turned down a different road, said yes instead of no, or stayed home when I took a chance at something, my life could be completely different. our lives seem so insular, the tunnel vision makes it easy to miss signs that may influence our lives towards happiness, love, good fortune, bad fortune, death, etc.  That chance they took with each other, that made that one day so magical even though fictional, does give food for thought and helped me realize that every decision we make is important. You may think I am giving this book a little too much weight, but this is what I thought about as I finished reading this book. Especially with how the book ended with another chance meeting, fate dealing another hand.

Yes this book was sweet, thoughtful, funny and full of the innocence of young love, but there was a lot of weight to this book too. As an adult, I loved the hope and joy this book made me feel because at times I feel jaded and skeptical, but it also made me appreciate where I am in my own life and happy I am past the struggles of youth although I do still like reading about them. ❤❤❤❤❤

This Chick’s Sunday Commentary: Like Books?

I started my book review blog 14 months ago as a way to combine the two things I love. Reading and talking about the book I was reading. I typically read 3-4 books a week and if I had read something great I wanted to shout it out to the world! Typically it was only my sister or my friend Ana who I told, as they both also read quickly, waiting eagerly for them to finish it so I could have a mini book discussion with them. Below are some of my favorites!

So, I started a book club, eager to get more people to read the books I liked so I could discuss them with others. However, I got frustrated when I had to read books that other people wanted to read. Lol. I’d find myself putting the book off until I had to read it, sometimes the night before.  I felt like I was in school again, and I hated that.  Although, I did like getting together for drinks and food! Here’s the group of ladies below, notice all the drinks and only one book.  Lol. ( I am on the left with the black and white patterned shirt…)

Really, I started my blog to get myself writing again. I had this idea that by writing reviews, it would start the creative juices flowing again, and it did!  I spent the last year writing my first novel, and finished it!  Yeah me! But, even when writing, I was thinking of all of the books I wanted to read and talk about. So, this post is a thank you to my followers that may or may not enjoy the books I read. That may or may not be influenced by my reviews. That may or may not have the same opinions about those books.  If you don’t, let’s talk!  That is, after all, the reason why I started this blog.  To talk about books to other people who love them as much as I do.

What is your favorite book?  Who is your favorite author to push on someone who is looking for something to read? What book did you just LOVE last year so much that you wanted to shout it to the world? What book are you reading right now?

Isn’t it fun?!!!

This Chick Read: Grin and Beard It (Winston Brothers #2) by Penny Reid

I fell in love with the Winston brothers while reading Truth or Beard, the first book in this series. These boys have southern charm, southern names, and an aw shucks intelligence that reels you in. Oh and they all have beards. Hence the clever titles of their books. Grin and Beard it is the story of Jethro and how he falls for Sienna Diaz, a movie star who he has never seen nor heard of, dropped into his small town to film a movie. Jethro, who is a park ranger by trade, helps Sienna, a damsel in distress, lost on the way to her film shoot. This Chick Read: Island of Glass (Guardians Trilogy #3) by Nora Roberts

The third and final installment of the Guardians Trilogy series, Island of Glass resolves the search for the three stars and saving the world from an evil goddess. After the charm of the second couple in Bay of Sighs, we were left with Doyle and Riley my least favorite Nora Roberts couple, I think of all time.  In the previous two books, these two characters did not get along. Unlike Ani and Sawyer, who were totally charming, Doyle and Riley took stoic and brooding to a new level. Continue reading “This Chick Read: Island of Glass (Guardians Trilogy #3) by Nora Roberts”

Duke of Pleasure continues the story of the Ghost of St. Giles, a pseudonym used by the heroes of the previous eleven books in the Maiden Lane series. This time the Ghost is a young woman, disguised as a boy named Alf. Continue reading “This Chick Read: Duke of Pleasure (Maiden Lane #11) by Elizabeth Hoyt”
