This Chick Read: Hedging His Bets (Brits in Manhattan #3) by Laura Carter

The third novel in the Brits in Manhattan series, Hedging His Bets takes place in London where Jake Harrington is by day working as a commodities broker and by night enjoying his friends with benefits arrangement with roommate Jess. What looks to be an easy arrangement between friends has hidden depths and as this novel evolves we learn through flashbacks that each of them is hiding from deeper emotions. Jess from the loss of her parents at a young age and Jake from the betrayal of his best female friend back in New York, Emily. When Jake has to go to the Hampton’s for a week to visit his family. he asks Jess to go with him for moral support.  While working to put his past behind him, Jake realizes what he wants for his future.

Jess was such an interesting heroine! Seeing her mother die from a broken heart, after watching her father waste away, she was afraid of love. She traveled with an aunt and uncle to third world countries and saw a bigger world view that influenced the decisions she made in life. Those flashbacks to Thailand showed a contrast between that culture’s faith and her own despondence and lack of color in her life. When she met Jake, her world bloomed.

Jake had a totally different upbringing with a happy family and happy life. His world, until he graduated from college revolved around his friendship and feelings for Emily. When he meets Jess, it is an instant connection but the easiness of their friendship fooled him for awhile. It isn’t until he has to face his past that he truly grows up and see’s what’s right in front of his face.

I liked Balancing the Scales and enjoyed Drew and Becky’s relationship. It was fun, hot and well there were pastries and everything is better with a piece of cake, right? It was a good start to a nice series, however, Hedging His Bets was the full meal, not just the dessert. The characters were well rounded, the sex scenes moved the story forward, and most importantly the emotional climax of Jake and Jess’s story gave the ending the impact I wanted for my happily ever after. Hedging His Bets is the best book in the series and Laura Carter’s best book to date. If you haven’t read the first two books in this series, I would encourage you to not be discouraged from picking up this novel. It can easily be read as a stand alone novel, but the first two books are also worth reading because of the British cheekiness and charm that infuses Ms. Carter’s style of writing. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

This Chick Read: Playing to Win (Brits in Manhattan #2) by Laura Carter

Playing to Win quote 1

Izzy is in New York to promote her new diet and fitness book when she crosses paths with gym owner Brooks Adams at his gym. They seem to have nothing in common, from their totally different approaches to fitness and health to their opposite end of the spectrum upbringings. Izzy’s snobby British background rubs Brooks solid middle class Manhattan personality the wrong way and sparks fly. When Izzy attacks him in her blog, they get a lot of press and decide to switch fitness regimes for two weeks to declare whose works the best. Living, eating and working out side by side for two weeks these adversaries start to enjoy the barbs they are throwing at each other and frustration turns to romance.

We got a hint of Brooks’s history in the first Brits in Manhattan novel, Balancing the Scales. Brooks, a single father who fought against the prejudice of his pregnant girlfriends parents as a teenager easily put that same stamp on Izzy’s socialite turned fitness expert. His trust was not easily gained and he was rather hard on Izzy. However, knowing his history made it easier for me to overlook his boorish behavior. Izzy was more two dimensional. She did come across as the Prada wearing fitness princess and even though in her late twenties acted pretty childish towards Brooks. I’ll admit, I got a little impatient with both of their shenanigans until they finally decided to act on their pent up frustrations. When they realized their feelings for each other I enjoyed their game playing a lot more.

Izzy’s insecurity held me back from feeling more empathy for her and I think that hurt how I felt about the two of them as a couple. I liked Brooks’s character and had been looking forward to reading his story. He was a guy that certainly deserved a happily ever after, but I didn’t have complete buy in that Izzy was that person for him. Laura Carter’s writing style is full of sweet charm and British wit which translated well in the writing of Izzy’s personality. Solid writing was a huge part of why I gave this book a three rating. I just wish that sweetness had hit the pages a little sooner so I could’ve loved Izzy a bit more. ❤️❤️❤️

This Chick Read: Balancing the Scales (Brits in Manhattan #1) by Laura Carter

Becky Fletcher is a patisserie chef in a hot Manhattan restaurant when she meets hotshot lawyer Drew Harrington at a bagel cart. He is immediately drawn to her looks and is attracted by that fresh British accent. Becky is a bit standoffish until Drew shows up at her work and starts to charm her with his cocky American humor. She is not interested in a relationship or hookup and despite their attraction and Drew’s busy schedule they agree to be “just friends”.

Of course, laws of attraction, and the rule romance books dictates that their just friends rule, will turn into a friends with benefits situation. As they get to know each other, they come to care for each other and that title of friend starts to not be enough. What Drew doesn’t know, and the reader finds out slowly, is that Becky left some baggage behind in England that she needs to clean up.

Drew and Becky at first glance don’t seem to be the right fit. He’s trying to make partner at his law firm and she works bakers hours. Yet somehow the two of them find a connection that works. I liked Becky’s sweet personality and once I learned her back story admired her for taking a stand and walking away from a bad relationship. Separately they each needed to grow, and together they gave each other the strength and support required to do it. A couple to root for and feel good about!

If you are a fan of Laura Carter’s you may miss the romantic suspense from her other novels, but you won’t be disappointed. This is a sweet love story with heart and a fun Saturday afternoon read. ❤️❤️❤️❣️

This Chick’s Sunday Guest Blogger:  Author Laura Carter! #Giveaway #BlurbReveal #BalancingtheScales

Laura Carter has quickly become one of my go to authors when I want to read an edgy contemporary romance. She writes from a British POV and her plots are filled with excellent writing and erotic dramatic suspense!

When I met her in person last year I was charmed by her personality and after reading the first book in her Vengeful Love series I became a fan. If you follow Laura on Facebook or Instagram you’ll really get to know her as she gives you an inside view of her island writing nooks and Friday celebratory cocktails. I try not to be jealous of all those beach pictures, but it’s hard!

I’m excited to hand over my Sunday blog to Laura so she can also charm all of you, but more importantly so she can tell you all about writing, her books, and what’s up next!

LAURA CARTER

I first met Deborah at RT Convention in Las Vegas in 2016. We were taking two minutes out from the craziness of the conference, and inevitably started talking books.
We have stayed in touch since, and I was thrilled when she asked if I would be interested in commandeering The Reading Chick blog for a day. I was thrilled, not only because I get to support Deborah’s blog and hopefully introduce myself to new readers, but also because there will be many writers among you and I think it is helpful to hear how fellow writers became published. Similar blogs certainly helped me.

So, here is my story…

When I was a young girl (*looks wistfully into the distance*), I would write song lyrics and make up plays. I would perform for my family, forcing my sister and cousins to take part. So, naturally, I grew up and became an attorney.

I know what you’re thinking—the two worlds don’t exactly go together like salt and pepper or Bonnie and Clyde. But, you see, my day job meant that I needed an escape from long hours and heavy documents, and that I was armed with knowledge of cities and a corporate worlds.

In fact, my first trilogy, VENGEFUL LOVE, published by Harlequin’s Carina Press, is a dark, city-based, erotic romance. Book Page described VENGEFUL LOVE as, “[A]fast-paced, scorching romance that moves from boardroom to bedroom, to the darker corners of desire and retribution.”

The VENGEFUL LOVE series follows Scarlett Heath, a high-flying London lawyer, as she falls hard for her enigmatic, quietly dangerous, and downright HOT client, Gregory Ryans. Their love story will take you on an exhilarating ride through passion, angst and corruption.

Getting my first publishing deal was both incredible and incredibly surreal. It is an experience I consider myself very lucky to have been through. I didn’t do things the conventional way (i.e. find an agent, work on the manuscript together, find a publisher). I bought a copy of “Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook” and I researched publishers. I scoured their websites and narrowed down my list of preferred publishers to a handful, so to speak. I sent off whatever they asked for—often a synopsis and the first three chapters, sometimes the complete manuscript—and I held my breath.

I was fortunate enough not to have to wait long for my first offer. I then informed the other publishers that I had received an offer and, suddenly, I had five! At that stage, I had advances versus royalty only deals on the table and, frankly, I had no clue what to do next. I had no idea how to differentiate between publishers and deals. That was when I decided I needed an expert to help.

I only approached one agent, on the basis she represented an author whose work I knew well, and who wrote in a similar genre to mine. That agent came on board and the rest, as they say, is history.

Until…

I started to attend book signings and events, and fell quickly into the insane and fabulous world of books, readers, bloggers and authors. The more I spoke to people in the book world, it became clear to me there were advantages and disadvantages of both traditional and indie publishing. I realised that I could write quicker than I could seal my next traditional publishing deal. That, combined with the encouragement of indie author friends, led me to self-publish my next title, SCARRED BY YOU.

SCARRED BY YOU
is the ultimate second chance romance. Dayna Cross and Clark Layton were always hot together, that hasn’t changed. But a lot of things have. These two characters will take you on a journey of twists and tears, through anger, lust, pain, love and hope.

Following the success of self-publishing SCARRED BY YOU, it is my intention to remain a hybrid author, bringing more books to the market than I might otherwise be able to if I were solely traditionally published. All the while, enjoying the knowledge and expertise that seasoned publishers can bring to my work.

So, what’s next for Laura Carter?

Well, I’m pleased you asked (you did, right?).

Earlier this year, I was fortunate enough to secure a new three book deal with New York publisher, Kensington Publishing. The deal is for three standalone romantic comedies, which are part of the BRITS IN MANHATTAN series.

The first book in the series, BALANCING THE SCALES, releases 21 November.

The BRITS IN MANHATTAN series follows a group of friends in New York as they cross paths with sassy Brits, who have the ability to get the hearts of my American heroes racing!

So, brace yourselves for the British Invasion! Expect comedy, heat and swoon-worthy romances.

This Chick Read: Scarred by You by Laura Carter

Dayna Cross and Clark Layton are rivals, each owning a large oil company, competing in that ruthless world. They are not only rivals in business, but they share a personal history. At two separate times in their lives, they had very passionate but brief relationships. Each separation more heartbreaking than the last. Laura Carter writes a realistic, gripping story about the intricacies of the oil business and a heartrending tale of two people who struggle to belong to each other, even though their families try to keep them apart. What adjectives can I use to describe Laura Carters novels?  Sexy, edgy, thrilling, and mysterious all come to mind.  Laura is the author of the Vengeful love series, and I reviewed the third book in the series, Black Diamonds, a few months ago. Her newest novel, Scarred by You, will be released on October 24th, and as a teaser, I have a copy of a blurb from that book!

Scarred by You Blurb:

Their past will become their future. Their scars will be reopened.

Clark Layton has the world at his feet. He is the CEO of one of the largest oil companies in the world and he has a fiancée most men would kill for. Then why, the night before his wedding, is he still thinking about everything he lost when he walked out on Dayna Cross?

Dayna didn’t intend to take the helm of Subsea Petroleum. But events beyond her control left her no choice. And she can handle it, mostly. She can juggle the long hours, the chauvinistic men, and a broken heart. What she can’t deal with is Clark Layton swanning back into her life and threatening to break down her walls.

They are rival CEOs and they are in a dogfight for a lucrative new pipeline. But as truths of their past begin to surface, business won’t be the biggest battle they enter into.

Sounds great, doesn’t it?  I’ll have the cover reveal and review of the book for you soon!

This Chick Read: Vengeful Love: Black Diamonds by Laura Carter

I would like to preface this review with a personal note.  I met Laura Carter, the author of this series, at the RT Convention in Las Vegas last month.  She and I shared a bench while quickly wolfing down vegetable wraps, (that cost a mint!).  I saw that she was wearing a black badge that stated she was an author, and struck up a conversation.  I have to say, the people, authors and readers, at this convention were very warm and approachable.  The ladies I met, talked to, and made friends with, were from all walks of life.  Having that one thing in common, books, really broke down the walls that we usually hide ourselves behind.  Books are a wonderful ice breaker!  Laura, as I stated above, was no exception to the rule.  She was lovely, friendly, Continue reading “This Chick Read: Vengeful Love: Black Diamonds by Laura Carter”
