This Chick Read: Skinwalker (Jane Yellowrock #1) by Faith Hunter

Skinwalker is a paranormal mystery set in urban New Orleans, a very appropriate setting for this genre.  What makes this book different than other paranormal books I’ve read is that our protagonist, Jane Yellowrock, is a Skinwalker and I’ve never read a book where the  Skinwalker wasn’t an evil character.  Skinwalkers can take the shape of any animal, and as Jane takes shape we see her struggle with her inner beast. I found that struggle to be just as interesting as her investigation. She is inhuman, yet that struggle humanizes her and makes her someone we can identify with and like. This Chick Read: A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses #2) by Sarah J. Maas

At the end of the first novel, Feyre dies, and all of the High Lords, present at the moment of her death, help re-make her.  She is brought back to life, but it is as an immortal, not as a human.  This novel is about Feyre’s internal struggle.  She killed others in order to save Tamlin, and the Spring Court, but in her mind, she can’t seem to wipe that blood off her hands, a la Lady Macbeth. This Chick’s Audible Review: Prudence by Gail Carriger (read by Moira Quirk)

I have read Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protecterate series and listened to her Etiquette and Espionage series, so when Prudence came out, the first in the Custard Protocol series, I immediately put it on my TBR list. Yep, it took me a year and a half, the impetus being that the second book in this series, Imprudence, is out. I do love being able to quickly move on to the second book! This Chick Read: Promise of Fire (The Kingmaker Chronicles Book 1) by Amanda Bouchet

You know when someone recommends a book to you and you aren’t sure that you want to add it to your TBR list?  My list is huge, but my sister promised that this book was worth moving to the top.  Boy, was she right!  Amanda Bouchet has created a world that is part fantasy, part mythology, and a whole lot of action adventure. This is a wonderful fantasy adventure novel that introduces us to a new type of adventurer, the Pathfinder. Shea belongs to the Pathfinder’s Guild, a job that she was raised to do from the age of 10. She has more experience traveling than others in her world, who may be at a more advanced age. This Chick Read: First Star I See Tonight (Chicago Stars #8) by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

The Chicago Stars series is so much fun, and I was really looking forward to reading the latest novel.  It did not disappoint!  Piper Dove and Cooper Graham were not looking for love.  In fact, they were both kind of prickly!  Cooper, a just retired quarterback for the Chicago Stars, has opened a nightclub, and wants to expand to several.  Piper is a private investigator, hired to check him out.  When they meet, sparks fly, and not the good kind!  It’s not until a third into the book, that she starts to intrigue Cooper.  He slowly starts to pursue her, but Piper has a lot of baggage. This Chick Read: Viking Warrior Rebel (Viking Warriors #2) by Asa Maria Bradley

Asa Maria Bradley has brought Viking lore and folk tales to life, in her series Viking Warriors. This Chick Read: In Safe Hands (Search and Rescue #4) by Katie Ruggle

In Safe Hands is the fourth and final book in Katie Ruggle’s Search and Rescue series.  Chris Jennings is a deputy in the Field County Sheriff’s department.  We’ve met Chris earlier in this series, investigating the various murders and crimes committed in this small burg.  His childhood friend Daisy, in the middle of the night through the window of her home, see’s what she thinks is a dead body being carted out of the vacant house across the street.  She calls in her friend Chris and the investigation begins. This Chick Read: Idol (VIP #1) by Kristen Callihan

Kristen Callihan has written both fantasy and sports romances, and excelled at them.  Idol is her first romance set in the rock world.  Killian, on a break from his band because his best friend and band member tried to commit suicide.  Killian was devastated, blaming himself for not seeing the signs, and also was angry that his friend was hurting so much and he didn’t come to him for help.  He rents a house in the countryside, and on his first night there gets drunk and crashes his vehicle through Libby’s gate and then proceeds to throw up all over her.  Love at first sight.  Well, maybe not! This Chick Read: P.S. I Like You by Kasie West

P.S. I Like You is a straight up young adult romance.  If you follow my blog, you know I like YA books, but usually they are in the fantasy genre, or historical.  This book is a contemporary romance set in high school, which I will admit, was a long time ago for me.  However, I received this book in my Uppercase Box book club of the month and cracked it open yesterday. I listened to the author, Kasie West’s video where she talked about her idea of writing a romance without all of the technology available to them today.  No texts, email, video, etc.  I thought, ok, that is like how it was when I was in High School.  Back in the good old days, when you passed notes and wrote letters.
