This Chick Read: Moonshadow by Thea Harrison

This is the first novel in a new series set in Thea Harrison’s Elder Races world. Sophie Ross is on leave from consulting for the LAPD when she inherits an estate in England. The inheritance has one caveat, that she must be able to get inside the estate, and provide proof that she did to the solicitors in England. This inheritance came at a great time because Sophie is on leave after being shot during a police investigation. Continue reading “This Chick Read: Moonshadow by Thea Harrison”

This Chick Read: Apprentice in Death ( In Death #43) by J.D. Robb

A sniper shoots three people at an NYC ice ring and Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her team are called in to catch the killer before the killer strikes again.  This was a faster moving investigation than previous novels, with Eve and her team figuring out the mystery pretty early on in the story. A step behind the shooter until the end, it was fascinating to see how Eve’s own apprenticeship with Capt.Feeney, and her own mentorship to Peabody gave her insight into how to crack the case and get into the mind of the shooter. This Chick Read: In the Barren Ground by Loreth Anne White

I picked up this book because I received an email from Amazon declaring it their pick for best romance of the year. This book was surprising in many ways.  The first being that I wouldn’t necessarily call this book a romance.  There was a romance, but it was only a sub plot to the intricately wrought, brutal, murder mystery that I found myself enmeshed in.  Yes, this book was fantastic, I agree!  But it was a murder mystery in the same vein as Fargo. In fact as I was reading it, I thought it was funny that the main character, rookie cop Tana Larsson, called the little city she found herself living in very Twin Peaks-ish. This Chick Read: Dragon Spawn (World of the Lupi #13) by Eileen Wilkes

Lily Yu, one of my favorite female protagonists in the paranormal genre, once again shows that you do not need magic or werewolf strength to kick ass.  Her kick assness mainly comes from logically analyzing and proceeding in the best manner possible. In Dragon Spawn we see a different side of Lily. Normally, she fills the role of friend, lover, and investigator, but when the children of the werewolf population falls in harms way we see her softer, maternal side. This Chick Read: The Operator (The Peri Reed Chronicles) by Kim Harrison

Peri Reed is trying to lie low and live a life off the grid.  After discovering in The Drafter that the life she’d been leading was fabricated, Peri is in hiding from Bill, her ex Opti handler.  Unfortunately, Bill has other plans for her. A drug has been created that would return all of the memories she’d lost. The catch is that she’d be hooked, and Bill could control her by providing her with the drug, Evocane. Her choice between re-discovering herself and becoming, essentially, a crack addict was actually a difficult one. The Operator explores her relationship with the man she once loved but forgot, the man she loved who betrayed her and the boss she’d like to kill.  With a couple other psychopaths thrown into the game.

The Operator explored a bit more of Peri’s background. Silas, the man she loved and had wiped from her memory, is no longer content to watch things happen from the sidelines. In my opinion, he’s a big part of the success of this story. Without Silas, Peri would just be a caricature, an empty humanoid shell. The fact that she wants to remember their previous life together gives her the strength to fight for her freedom, and someone we can identify with and root for.

Kim Harrison is the author of one of my favorite series (The Hollows) and I can’t help but compare Peri to that series female protagonist, Rachel Morgan. Peri  and Rachel have a couple of things in common.  They both have an inordinate amount of talent, they are a bit insecure, and their conscious comes in the form of a sidekick (Peri’s a hallucination of her ex partner and Rachel’s a pixie named Jenks). They both have a lot of honor, even though they may use bad judgement and extraordinary means to deliver the right outcome. When I pick up a book in either of their series, I know I am in for a wild ride.  The Operator was definitely that!

❤❤️❤️❤️
