This Chick Read: Truth or Beard (Winston Brothers book 1) by Penny Reid

First- I love this title!  Truth or Beard is an obvious play on words, and the characters do, at one point play truth or dare.  More interestingly, Duane, the male protagonist, has a bushy beard. I can only think of one other romance book I’ve read where the man has a beard, and I loved that book too! Hmmm, something to think about anyway…  Back to the book. This Chick Read: One Snowy Night (Heartbreaker Bay #2.5) by Jill Shalvis

We were introduced to Rory and Max in The Trouble with Mistletoe, the second novel in the Heartbreaker Bay series.  Rory works for Willa in her pet store, and Max has a dog who he brings in for grooming a lot more than a dog probably needs to get groomed, just so he can talk, or stare broodingly at Rory. In this short novella, we learn that Max and Rory have a past when he offers to drive her home for Christmas. This Chick Read: In the Barren Ground by Loreth Anne White

I picked up this book because I received an email from Amazon declaring it their pick for best romance of the year. This book was surprising in many ways.  The first being that I wouldn’t necessarily call this book a romance.  There was a romance, but it was only a sub plot to the intricately wrought, brutal, murder mystery that I found myself enmeshed in.  Yes, this book was fantastic, I agree!  But it was a murder mystery in the same vein as Fargo. In fact as I was reading it, I thought it was funny that the main character, rookie cop Tana Larsson, called the little city she found herself living in very Twin Peaks-ish. This Chick Read: Dragon Spawn (World of the Lupi #13) by Eileen Wilkes

Lily Yu, one of my favorite female protagonists in the paranormal genre, once again shows that you do not need magic or werewolf strength to kick ass.  Her kick assness mainly comes from logically analyzing and proceeding in the best manner possible. In Dragon Spawn we see a different side of Lily. Normally, she fills the role of friend, lover, and investigator, but when the children of the werewolf population falls in harms way we see her softer, maternal side. This Chick Read: Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter

If I had read the cover of this book more thoroughly before picking it up, I would’ve realized that this novel is a modernized version of the Russian folktale Vassillissa the Light.  Since I did not, I spent the majority of the novel going WTF!!?  Luckily, I have some minor knowledge of Baba Yaga, who is a witch in the Russian folktale, and I kind of remembered that she was evil, and so, got partially clued in that this was a modern retelling of a folktale.  Even knowing that I still would have to say WTF!!?  HOWEVER, the story was well written and strangely fascinating.  Enough that I kept reading, and enjoyed the experience. This Chick Read: Veiled Threat (Highland Magic #3) by Helen Harper

If you have not read this charming series by Helen Harper, you are missing out!  Integrity, a name that is somewhat of an oxymoron, as she is a former thief, has lived up to her name and shown that she exudes both integrity and honor.  She is determined to claim Clan Adair’s land, and to clear her father’s name as the murderer of his clan. At the end of Honour Bound, Integrity loses the Sidhe games, but wins the prize when her crush, Byron awards her the prize he has won.
