This Chick Read: Pretty Fierce by Kieran Scott

Kaia had led a very unusual life. Her parents were hired assasins, taking her on jobs with them, until one day – the job hit back. Kaia escapes to live with her “grandparents” in South Carolina, where, for the first time, she leads the life she always wanted to have with her parents. A normal one. One day, ‘stranger danger’ hits town, and she realizes that her parents may not be dead. This book is mostly about her search for them.

I knew I was in for a crazy book when Kaia defends herself from a kidnapping by kicking butt, stepping on the guys neck, and pointing his own rifle down at his head. She’s trying to figure out if she’ll shoot or not, when her boyfriend Oliver walks through the door to pick her up for a movie, and catches her in the act. Does he run screaming from the room? Nope! He follows her into a car and makes a mad escape with her.  Ok, not very realistic, but it did keep the pace of the book from slowing down.

I was exhausted from reading this book. It was all action, with only moments for reflection and reason. Kaia didn’t appeal to me very much, and instead I looked for Oliver’s POV to bring a little realism and sanity into the story line. Ok, yes, I understand what kind of book I was reading, but I just couldn’t really care if Kaia ever found her parents alive or dead, and that was the whole plot! I gave this book ❤❤❤ because it was well written and there weren’t too many holes in the plot. I would’ve liked it better if it was told entirely from Oliver’s POV. He was sweet, mixed with a bunch of teenage badass…

I was given an ARC of this book for my honest review, and yep, I was honest.

This Chick Read: Gone Too Deep (Search and Rescue #3) by Katie Ruggle

Gone Too Deep continues the underlying storyline about who killed the headless man found in the first book,  Hold Your Breath.  Baxter Price, Ellie’s father, calls his daughter out of the blue rambling about people being after him.  Her father has a history of mental illness, and Ellie is concerned that he may become lost or hurt in the Colorado wilderness, unable to take care of himself.  She leaves work in Chicago and travels to Simpson, Colorado to try to find him.  She enlists the aid of George Holloway, a member of Search and Rescue to take her on a three day hike through the wilderness to her grandfathers cabin. This Chick Read: Hard as it Gets (A Hard Ink novel) by Laura Kaye

I am definitely in summer beach read mode.  I keep hovering over mysteries and fantasy novels, but keep picking up some romances that I’ve had on the back burner.  It is that time of year for fun, love and adventure.  Laura Kaye is always a must read, as her romances have grit and their men have issues that just need a good woman to help them overcome.  Nick Rixey is exactly that man.  He is ex military and his last mission went bad and half his squad died.  He was leading that mission and blamed himself for those men dying.  When Becca Merritt seeks him out, he doesn’t want anything to do with her, after all, it was her father who served over him, and who led them into that trap where his men died.  Becca, not knowing his feelings over her father, and actually not knowing that truth, needs help finding her brother, who has disappeared.  The last time she and her brother had talked, he had mentioned that he’d found information that led him to believe that her father was not the man that they thought he was, and she refused to listen.  Now, she has come to Nick, to help her on her search.

Nick reaches out to his old team, who even though they separated on bad terms, come to he and Becca’s aid.  The interaction between he and his team was tense with unresolved emotions and the scenes between those guys were very well written.  As this is the first in the series, I look forward to reading a book about each of them. Nick tried so hard to be ambivalent to Becca, but his protective instincts overcame any other instinct he had to shut down what he was feeling for her.  His character was dark, his voice raspy, his psyche injured, and he needed a little light in his world.  Becca became his light.  Becca was a layered character, not just a woman in need, although she certainly was that.  Her elder brother died from a drug overdose, her father was dead, and her surviving brother had disappeared.  She was a nurse, so was a nurturer, and even with her brothers disappearance, she could see that there was something special about Nick, beyond the intense attraction she had to him, and she wanted to help him heal.

I picked up Hard as it Gets looking for a light romance and got a well crafted, layered romantic action adventure. There are a lot of books in this series, so I’m looking forward to picking up the next one!

This Chick Read: Hold Your Breath (Search and Rescue #1) by Katie Ruggle

Don’t let the cover fool you, this book is so much more than a hot guy with a gun. Actually, the hot guy doesn’t even hold a gun until the end of the novel, so that is somewhat misleading.  This series starts with the novella On His Watch, which I haven’t read yet, but after finishing this fast paced action thriller, I did add it to my kindle, as it’s free right now on Amazon, and I enjoyed this book too much to not check it out.  Callum is the Team Leader of a Dive and Rescue team, and we are introduced to his character in this book, leading a training session.  He seems gruff, inflexible and stern, but when female team member Lou cracks a joke, he can’t help but crack a smile. This Chick Read: The Brimstone Deception by Lisa Shearin

Lisa Shearin’s SPI Files series takes place in New York City, but it’s a New York that regular people don’t see.  Unless you have taken Brimstone, a new designer drug that allows the user to “see” the true form of those around them.  Something that SPI, does not want to happen.  Humans would freak out  if they knew what they were living among.   Continue reading “This Chick Read: The Brimstone Deception by Lisa Shearin”
