This Chick Read: Mercury Striking by Rebecca Zanetti

I am a huge fan of Rebecca Zanetti’s Dark Protectors series and, in fact, just finished it during the holidays.  When I saw she had a new series being released, I requested a copy on NetGalley and Kensington Books shared a pre-release copy.  Mercury Striking is the first novel in the Scorpius Syndrome series. The setting is  a post apocalyptic United Stated, where a virus called Scorpius has wiped out a majority of the population.

The following synopsis is directly from the authors website Rebeccazanetti.com.

With nothing but rumors to lead her, Lynne Harmony has trekked across a nightmare landscape to find one man—a mysterious, damaged legend who protects the weak and leads the strong. He’s more than muscle and firepower—and in post-plague L.A., he’s her only hope. As the one woman who could cure the disease, Lynne is the single most volatile—and vulnerable—creature in this new and ruthless world. But face to face with Jax Mercury…

Danger has never looked quite so delicious…

I have read a lot of post apocalyptic fiction, and I think Rebecca Zanetti has created a universe that is one of the most fascinating I’ve read. The landscape was dirty and grey, trash heaps providing the only pops of color from old fast food wrappers. The virus, if you survived it, either turned you into a Ripper, a psychotic human with serial killer tendencies, a zombi-like humanoid, or you developed extra abilities.  If you had been smart, you were smarter, strong, stronger, etc.  Lynne Harmony, the creator, and also victim of the Scorpius virus is, as most of Zanetti’s female characters, an extremely intelligent woman.  Her intelligence was boosted after she recovered from the virus, but she still has a fragility that makes Jax Mercury want to protect her.  Mercury, an ex-soldier, created a safe haven in his old neighborhood that he guarded by force against Rippers and other Ganglords.  The two of them together have the brain and brawn to protect the other survivors and hopefully find the cure.

Zanetti did a great job of fleshing out her characters so that they were not one dimensional.  My imagination drew pictures of grit, grime and blood (not to mention the smells), which only made the tender moments have more clarity.  The storyline focused on Lynne and Jax, but Zanetti spent time making the other characters mysterious and interesting as well.  I hope she writes fast because I’m hooked!
