This Chick Read: The Brimstone Deception by Lisa Shearin

Lisa Shearin’s SPI Files series takes place in New York City, but it’s a New York that regular people don’t see.  Unless you have taken Brimstone, a new designer drug that allows the user to “see” the true form of those around them.  Something that SPI, does not want to happen.  Humans would freak out  if they knew what they were living among.  Makenna, the main character, is a seer, meaning she can also see through the magical disguises of other races, and see what they truly look like, though her capability is genetic.  She and her partner need to discover who is making Brimstone and murdering some high profile people before this drug hits the streets.

As this is the third book in the series, the characters are well developed and our relationship to them has deepened.  I love reading Makenna’s dialog, as she is from the south and speaks with a kind of corny southern accent.  I picture Brenda, from The Closer, if you’ve ever seen that show.  That southern accent gives the illusion of naïveté, at least to New Yorkers, and they underestimate her capabilities.  Just as Brenda, in The Closer outsmarts the criminals around her, getting them to confess their crime, Makenna uses that southern accent to charm and constantly surprise her enemies, and truthfully, also her friends and partner.

Watching she and her partner solve the mystery is great fun, and Lisa Shearin has done a good job of building a world that is similar to the one we live in, yet slightly different.  It makes you look at the guy sitting on the bus next to you a little differently.  Is he truly human?  Probably so, but it would be fun to find out that we live among all of those supernatural races.  Life would be so much more interesting!

This series is fast paced and a ton of fun. If you haven’t read the first book, it’s titled The Grendel Affair: A SPI Files Novel.  I highly recommend this series for an action adventure, with a hint of romance, and a ton of supernatural.
