Believe- A True Christmas Short Story ( part 2)

My mother came from a very large family. She was the second of nine children, Paula, Katherine, Steven Margaret, Nancy, Mary, Theresa, Paul and Clay. The order may not be correct, but my mom was second in a long line of children. My mother came into the living room and sat next to me on the couch. Tears were running down her face. She told me the phone call was from one of my aunts. My uncle Steve had killed himself in my grandfather’s home. Continue reading “Believe – A True Christmas Short Story (part 3)”

This Chick Read: Apprentice in Death ( In Death #43) by J.D. Robb

A sniper shoots three people at an NYC ice ring and Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her team are called in to catch the killer before the killer strikes again.  This was a faster moving investigation than previous novels, with Eve and her team figuring out the mystery pretty early on in the story. A step behind the shooter until the end, it was fascinating to see how Eve’s own apprenticeship with Capt.Feeney, and her own mentorship to Peabody gave her insight into how to crack the case and get into the mind of the shooter. Believe- A True Christmas Short story (part two)

To start at the beginning read Believe- A True Christmas short story ( part one)
Christmas in my family was definitely full of traditions. On Christmas Eve, we would all gather for a formal dinner. Every year it was something different. Mom would try her hand at cooking Cornish game hen, goose, ham, turkey, and my favorite, roast beef. We would start decorating the table the day before Christmas Eve. This Chick Read: Truth or Beard (Winston Brothers book 1) by Penny Reid

First- I love this title!  Truth or Beard is an obvious play on words, and the characters do, at one point play truth or dare.  More interestingly, Duane, the male protagonist, has a bushy beard. I can only think of one other romance book I’ve read where the man has a beard, and I loved that book too! Hmmm, something to think about anyway…  Back to the book. This Chick Read: One Snowy Night (Heartbreaker Bay #2.5) by Jill Shalvis

We were introduced to Rory and Max in The Trouble with Mistletoe, the second novel in the Heartbreaker Bay series.  Rory works for Willa in her pet store, and Max has a dog who he brings in for grooming a lot more than a dog probably needs to get groomed, just so he can talk, or stare broodingly at Rory. In this short novella, we learn that Max and Rory have a past when he offers to drive her home for Christmas. This Chick Read: In the Barren Ground by Loreth Anne White

I picked up this book because I received an email from Amazon declaring it their pick for best romance of the year. This book was surprising in many ways.  The first being that I wouldn’t necessarily call this book a romance.  There was a romance, but it was only a sub plot to the intricately wrought, brutal, murder mystery that I found myself enmeshed in.  Yes, this book was fantastic, I agree!  But it was a murder mystery in the same vein as Fargo. In fact as I was reading it, I thought it was funny that the main character, rookie cop Tana Larsson, called the little city she found herself living in very Twin Peaks-ish.
