This Chick Read: Pretty Fierce by Kieran Scott

Kaia had led a very unusual life. Her parents were hired assasins, taking her on jobs with them, until one day – the job hit back. Kaia escapes to live with her “grandparents” in South Carolina, where, for the first time, she leads the life she always wanted to have with her parents. A normal one. One day, ‘stranger danger’ hits town, and she realizes that her parents may not be dead. This book is mostly about her search for them.

I knew I was in for a crazy book when Kaia defends herself from a kidnapping by kicking butt, stepping on the guys neck, and pointing his own rifle down at his head. She’s trying to figure out if she’ll shoot or not, when her boyfriend Oliver walks through the door to pick her up for a movie, and catches her in the act. Does he run screaming from the room? Nope! He follows her into a car and makes a mad escape with her.  Ok, not very realistic, but it did keep the pace of the book from slowing down.

I was exhausted from reading this book. It was all action, with only moments for reflection and reason. Kaia didn’t appeal to me very much, and instead I looked for Oliver’s POV to bring a little realism and sanity into the story line. Ok, yes, I understand what kind of book I was reading, but I just couldn’t really care if Kaia ever found her parents alive or dead, and that was the whole plot! I gave this book ❤❤❤ because it was well written and there weren’t too many holes in the plot. I would’ve liked it better if it was told entirely from Oliver’s POV. He was sweet, mixed with a bunch of teenage badass…

I was given an ARC of this book for my honest review, and yep, I was honest.

Review Blitz! The Hard Truth about Sunshine by Sawyer Bennett #excerpt

FBHardTruthNowAvailable

I am so excited to be a part of the review tour for Sawyer Bennett’s novel The Hard Truth About Sunshine. This novel is not your typical contemporary romance. It’s a novel that deals with some hard truths, finding the courage to forgive, and falling in love. Please read the blurb and excerpt below, followed by my review.

The Hard Truth About Sunshine AMAZON

New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett has written her most gripping and poignant tale yet. Provocatively heart-breaking, audaciously irreverent and romantically fulfilling, The Hard Truth About Sunshine exposes just how very thin the line is between a full life and an empty existence.

Despite having narrowly escaped death’s clutches, Christopher Barlow is grateful for nothing. His capacity to love has been crushed. He hates everyone and everything, completely unable to see past the gray stain of misery that coats his perception of the world. It’s only after he involuntarily joins a band of depressed misfits who are struggling to overcome their own problems, does Christopher start to re-evaluate his lot in life. This Chicks Take Control of my TBR Update! (week 3) #TakeControlTBR

I’ll admit, I got a little off track this week!  I actually had a social life!  Lol. A hockey game one night and then an exhibit and book signing on another, which was great fun, really! But, with the ARC commitments (two books) and those other activities, I only got one book read that will count towards my challenge. And that book was…. insert drumroll here….

1) Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

This book truly deserves all of the great things everyone has to say about it. Check my blog for a future review!

Take Control of my TBR Challenge Goal – 12 books

Week 1 started off with a bang! 6 books read

Week 2 had a couple ARC’s throw off my total… 4 books read.

Week 3 had great weather, fun extracurricular activities 1 1/2 ARC’s read… and 1 book finished for the challenge.

3 week total- 11 books.  I have until this Friday to meet my 12 book challenge, and I know I can easily get that done.  So, just to make things fun, do you all think I can get to a higher book total? Anyone want to race me to the end? Ready…Set…Read!

I’ll post one last Take Control of my TBR Update next week! I do want to give a quick Thanks! To Kimberly at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.  This has been fun!

This Chick Read: The Unyielding (Call of Crows #3) by Shelly Laurenston

The Unyielding is the third and, I think, final book in the Call of Crows series ending the story arc of Ragnarok, or the end of the world. Erin Amstel is the only one who can steal Stutr, the flaming sword located on the Isle of Corpses. A place where crows are definitely not welcome. Up to the challenge, Erin accepts her fate and dives through the mystical door, accidentally bringing her maybe boyfriend Stieglitz Lundstrom with her. This novel, told with a kind of slapstick, frenetic humor, tells of their journey through mythological lands to retrieve this sword from a corpse eating dragon with the hope of returning in time to save the world. It reminded me a bit of Beowulf, if Jeff Daniels and Owen Wilson in their Dumb and Dumber roles were sent out to heroically save the world. This Chick Read: The Cage by Megan Shepherd

The Cage has a rather disturbing premise. Six teenagers are kidnapped from earth and held on some sort of alien space station. They are put into a simulated Earth environment and given a few rules. Play their games to collect their tokens, eat to remain healthy, and by day 21 start having sex. If you have a vivid imagination like I do, this premise doesn’t seem too out there, right? This book reminded me of a high school psychology class excercise. If you were stuck on a lifeboat, or deserted island or something, who would you want with you, and how would you react? Each of these six teenagers have things they are good at, one is brilliantly smart, one is a mechanic, one is bilingual, another was a criminal dealing on the black market, and then Cora was a Senator’s daughter who had just gotten out of juvie. Will they use these skills to survive? Continue reading “This Chick Read: The Cage by Megan Shepherd” →

This Chick Read: Accidentally on Purpose (Heartbreaker Bay #3) by Jill Shalvis

If a group of friends worked in the same neighborhood, became friends you could rely on, wished on a fountain for love, and then found it, you’d be reading the Heartbreaker Bay series from Jill Shalvis….or watching old episodes of Friends. Regardless, you’d be enjoying the hell out of yourself! Continue reading “This Chick Read: Accidentally on Purpose (Heartbreaker Bay #3) by Jill Shalvis” →

This Chicks Take Control of my TBR Update! (Week 2) #TakeControlTBR

Kimberly at Caffeinated Book Reviewer created this challenge to motivate us to read some books on our TBR lists. Reduce those stacks of books, even if they are virtual stacks! This week I had to read one of my ARC commitments, which doesn’t count towards my challenge, so I didn’t get as much read as last week.  However, I still read four books. Look for my reviews in the future!

1) Baron: The Knickerbocker Club by Joanna Shupe

2) The Hunt (The Cage #2) by Megan Shepherd

3) An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

4) Devil in Spring (The Ravenals #3) by Lisa Kleypas

My goal for this challenge was to complete 12 books. I do have a couple more ARC’s that I need to fit in this week, but I should definitely hit my goal this week. This challenge goes through the 31st, so maybe I should’ve set myself a higher number? But then, what’s the fun in setting a goal you can’t hit!

  • Last week- 6
  • This week-4

Total count -10!

Until next week!

This Chick Read: Perfected by Kate Jarvik Birch

There are a couple of spoilers in this review. Read at your own risk…

Ella has been born and trained to be a pet. Yes, just like a dog, Ella is adopted by a family, micro chipped and brought home to live in her new home. She has been trained to be a perfect girl, she plays the piano, can make idle conversation, and can keep her own emotions at bay. She doesn’t know how to do the things normal girls can do, like read or swim. She is adopted into a Senator’s family. The Senator who helped pass the bill to make it ok to own humans again. This Chick Read: Break Out (Dark Desires #1) by Nina Croft

Synopsis: Two thousand year old vampire Ricardo Sanchez won’t take no for an answer. Irreverent, insatiable, and utterly irresistible, Rico lives for no one but himself…  there’s more romance verbiage, so I thought I was picking up a paranormal romance.  I mean, wouldn’t you? Boy, was I in for a surprise!  A good one though! This book, the first in a series about the suave devil/vampire you read about above, and his FLIGHT CREW.  Yes, you read that right. Break Out is about Rico, the space vampire!  I have to giggle a little at that sentence. Continue reading “This Chick Read: Break Out (Dark Desires #1) by Nina Croft “ →

This Chick Read: Rock Chick Reawakening (Rock Chick 0.5) by Kristen Ashley

Some spoilers ahead!!

The Rock Chick series is one of my favorite  Kristen Ashley series, and it’s about time Daisy and Marcus had their own story! Daisy has been one of my favorite Rock Chicks, with Hector and Sadie’s story really giving us a little bit more of her back story than we had been given previously. In Rock Chick Regret, we learn through Sadie’s rape and beating about Daisy having survived that same situation with Marcus’s help. Rock Chick Reawakening is the story of the courtship of Daisy by Marcus. A courtship that begins for Marcus before Daisy’s rape, but for Daisy, it starts after.
We know Daisy as the flamboyant ex-stripper with the tinker bell laugh. We learn that she’s also a lady who has had some hard knocks in her young life. A woman who is a stripper who loves her bedazzler,  but she also always has a kind word for others and brightens up the room with her tinker bell laugh.

Marcus see’s her inner beauty and knows she is the one for him. He is destroyed when she is raped before he has decided to make an advance in her direction. His protection coming too late, but his patience in dealing with her demons after that incident shows his inner beauty, even though he is a mob boss. That is something I’ll credit Kristen Ashley with doing so well in her novels. Sometimes her men fall on the other side of the law and she doesn’t make excuses for them or try to paint what they do in a nice light. However, she does allow you to make that choice of seeing their inner goodness, even if sometimes they make rotten business decisions and kill people.

Marcus has always been so mysterious that even though this book was still more about Daisy, it was great to see why her star shone so bright for him. If you’re a fan of this series, you definitely need to read Rock Chick Reawakening! ❤❤❤❤❣
