My sister and I took a girls trip this year and decided to go to the RT Convention in Las Vegas. Wednesday was my first day, and it was soooo busy! There are reader parties, writer seminars, and social events, all booked back to back. My feet were ok (thanks to my new shoes!), my back hurt a bit, and my mind was spinning! I had a 30 minute private meeting with Cherry Adair to discuss a novel I am writing. I’ve entered her challenge called Just Finish the Damned Book Club, and she was nice enough to meet with those of us who were at the event to give us a little private advice. Thanks Cherry! My Interview with Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie authors of America’s First Daughter

Stephanie and Laura, thank you so much for taking the time to answer a few questions for my blog about yourselves, and your new book America’s First Daughter.
ME: You both have successful careers as authors in a different genre, romance. Where and how did the idea come up to make the leap and collaborate on a historical fiction novel, and how was Patsy Jefferson chosen as the subject matter?
SD/LK: This novel, which explores the life and times of Martha “Patsy” Jefferson Randolph, the eldest daughter of our third president, was years in the making. It started one night when we were having dinner together and discovered a mutual interest in American history. Over burgers at a writing conference, we wondered what Jefferson was like as a father, not just a founding father.
At the time, Laura was a history of professor by day teaching senior seminars on Jefferson at the U.S. Naval Academy as well as a romance author by night, whereas Stephanie split her writing time between romance and historical fiction. We got the crazy brainchild to combine our experiences in co-authoring a book about Jefferson’s eldest daughter, and immediately raced back to the hotel room to research. Frankly, we had no idea the journey we were about to embark upon. We didn’t know that it would take five years, three agents, eighteen thousand letters and a road trip to get this book out.
But we did know, right from that very first night, that we had stumbled upon a great untold American story.
This Chick Read: Sea of Stars (The Kricket Series book 2) by Amy A. Bartol
The majority of Sea of Stars finds Kricket running with Trey Allairis, away from everyone who wants to control her, and through her, her powers of being able to see and change the future. With the exception of Trey’s two Cavar brothers, Jax and Wayra, she does not trust anyone else on Ethar. From what we have seen of the other men on Ethar, and how the men from this planet treat women, I don’t blame her. This Chick Read: America’s First Daughter by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie
America’s First Daughter is the story of Thomas Jeffersons oldest daughter Patsy, and her life as young girl, daughter, wife, mother, and most importantly keeper of the legacy that was her father. What a fascinating book! Thomas Jefferson was a prolific writer, thousands of letters which are available , the authors used those historical letters and crafted a very well plotted believable tale. Most of which is based on fact, but some liberties were taken by the authors to create an interesting and cohesive story. This Chick Read: Under Different Stars (The Kricket series Book 1) by Amy A. Bartol
What a great find! I saw a tweet about this book with a quote that read “So she’s a skeezer? What’s a skeezer? A boyfriend stealer. Lol.” That one line made me curious enough to look this book up on Amazon, and the synopsis made it sound good enough to read. As I started reading, the writing was so good, the main character, Kricket, was flawed and funny, that before I knew it, I had read the entire first book in the series and immediately bought the second. This Chick Read: The Rejected Writers’ Book Club by Suzanne Kelman
The Rejected Writers’ Book Club was surprisingly charming and fantastically funny. The cast of characters all seemed slightly crazy, even more so set against the perfect straight man (or woman) Janet Johnson, the librarian. Somehow, Janet finds herself drawn into a caper by a group of older ladies, calling themselves The Rejected Writers’ Book Club. Doris, the leader and Alpha of the club, had “gasp”, had her book accepted by a publishing house in San Francisco. This Chick Read: Waylaid by Kim Harrison
What happens when the worlds of Rachel Morgan from Kim Harrison’s Hollows series and Peri Reed from The Drafter collides? You get the chance to find out in Waylaid a novella by the author who wrote both. Rachel Morgan is one of my absolute favorite fantasy characters and when that series ended, well, I was really unhappy. When I heard that she would be back in a novella, I jumped at the chance to read it ahead of its release on April 4th. Continue reading “This Chick Read: Waylaid by Kim Harrison”
This Chick Read: Homecoming by Tanya Bullock
The tag line for this novella was “Quite possibly the strangest romance ever told” and I will admit, I wanted to know what made it the strangest romance! Luckily Blackbird Digital Publishing sent me an ARC, so I could read this short story and give my honest review. Continue reading “This Chick Read: Homecoming by Tanya Bullock”
This Chick Read: Magic Stars (The Grey Wolf Part 1) by Ilona Andrews
Magic Stars is a novella about Derek and Julie, from the Kate Daniels series. This story takes place after Kate and Curran leave the Pack. Derek, who had also severed his ties with the pack to join Kate and Curran, was hunting down the killers to a family of four when his path intersects with Julie, Kate’s ward. Julie, a very head strong 16, takes a case that had come in to Kate’s business, and since Kate had been out, decided to investigate on her own. Derek and Julie realize that they are investigating the same crime, and join together to solve it. Continue reading “This Chick Read: Magic Stars (The Grey Wolf Part 1) by Ilona Andrews”
This Chick Read: Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton
This YA book took me completely by surprise. I try not to read other reviews if I think I’m going to review a book myself, but I had read the synopsis. It sounded intriguing, but didn’t sound special, yep, insert foot here. I’ll get back to this statement, I promise, BUT, Rebel of the Sands did have some similarities to other YA novels.
