Is it just me, or does Nora Roberts new novel Stars of Fortune: Book one of the Guardians Trilogy seem very similar to her Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy? In Stars of Fortune, the six protagonists are strangers who “find” each other in Greece, where we find out, each of them are looking for the same ancient relic. This is, of course, a love story, so even though there are six people and we learn a bit about each of them, this story is being told predominantly from the perspective of Sasha, an American who has the ‘sight’, and Bran, an Irishman, who is also a Magician.
Nora Roberts is one of the most beloved romance writers, as well as one of the most prolific. I suppose, in the hundreds of books that she has written, it is possible that she has put her characters through every romantic, suspenseful scenario imaginable. It could be that I wouldn’t have noticed, except that it wasn’t that long ago that I read the Cousins O’Dwyer. Yes, there are differences in the characters from O’Dwyer to the Guardians trilogy. There is also more time spent developing those characters, the sub storyline as well, but the underlining theme seems to be the same. Not just good versus evil, because that theme has been used by every novelist since time began, but that the antagonist is an evil supernatural being. That being must defeat our six hero’s in order to gain strength, enter our world, and then rule it.
Other similarities include the characteristics of the leads. Bran Killian, the main male lead, reminds me a lot of Connor. Sasha reminds me a lot of Iona, and yes, I realize that those two were cousins in the O’Dwyer series. I think we know Ms. Roberts won’t ever take her books in That direction, thank goodness, but both of those characters jumped to mind as I was reading this book. There is also the fact that in both books, there were magical skirmishes, and that the big battle will culminate in the third book. We do have to read about all of the characters, and watch them fall in love, so I get that, but…
If you just want a light romance, then Stars of Fortune is perfect for you. If you are a big Nora Roberts fan as I am, I think you’ll be a little disappointed! I will, however, still read the next book, due out in June 2016. If you haven’t read the Cousins O’Dwyer series, read them, but don’t say you weren’t warned!
