This Chick Read: Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1) by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Illuminae takes reading a novel to the next level. It is part book, part graphic novel, and all fun! The story of Kady Grant and Ezra Mason is told through a series of emails, military diaries, memos and narrated videos. It is set in 2575, and starts pretty normally with Kady breaking up with Her boyfriend Ezra. That should have been the most dramatic thing to happen that day, but it wasn’t. This Chick Read: Future Threat (Future Shock #2) by Elizabeth Briggs

Future Threat takes up six months after Future Shock ends. Elena and Adam are together, at least as much as Elena can be with her survivors guilt and PTSD from the results of their last trip into the future. They are trying to get on with their lives after Aether Corp. messed with their future. One day Aether comes calling and asks Elena, Adam and Chris back to run some tests. They end up being drugged and forced to go back into the future to rescue another team that had not come back from their most recent mission. This Chick Read: Apprentice in Death ( In Death #43) by J.D. Robb

A sniper shoots three people at an NYC ice ring and Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her team are called in to catch the killer before the killer strikes again.  This was a faster moving investigation than previous novels, with Eve and her team figuring out the mystery pretty early on in the story. A step behind the shooter until the end, it was fascinating to see how Eve’s own apprenticeship with Capt.Feeney, and her own mentorship to Peabody gave her insight into how to crack the case and get into the mind of the shooter. This Chick Read: Star Nomad (Fallen Empire book 1) by Lindsay Buroker

Lindsay Buroker has a new science fiction series, Fallen Empire, that has been released on Amazon, and is free with a Kindle Unlimited subscription. I haven’t read a true science fiction novel in a little while, but when I read this synopsis I thought it had all of the traits of some of my favorite genres. A strong female lead character, a conflict between two alien races, a lot of action adventure, and the promise of either a great male-female friendship or love affair.  I was not disappointed! This Chick Read: Prophecy by Lea Kirk

Earth is attacked by an alien race, and billions of humans are annihilated.  Some are captured and brought aboard spaceships to be sold as slaves.  In a holding cell, a small group of humans and a small group of Matirans, join together to escape their captors.  While doing this, two of them, one Human, and one Matiran, discover that they are prophesied to be together to unify their two races and bring peace to their people.

I was very pleasantly surprised at how well this novel was written.  The plot was developed thoroughly, the language the aliens spoke was not too different than ours which helped humanize them, and the characters were very likable.  Alexandra Bock, finds herself mysteriously drawn to Gryf, fights it briefly but their circumstances draw them together.   Gryf was such a likable guy!  His every action was for the better of the group and totally selfless.  He was a hard guy to hate.  Luckily, although an alien, anatomically, and physically, Matirans were very humanoid.  The only difference being their blue skin.  I could overlook blue skin for a well built, all around handsome, good guy!  Their enemy is extremely unlikeable, which makes me root for Alex and Gryf even more.  This is a classic tale of good versus evil, falling in love with an alien and saving two planets.  Seriously, though, it was a good book!

If you like romances with a bit of a science fiction twist, this was a good one!  This is the first book I’ve read by Lea Kirk, but it won’t be my last!
