This Chick Read: The Girl From Summer Hill by Jude Deveraux

Tate Landers, a smoldering Hollywood star, returns to his mothers childhood home in Summer Hill.  He grew up on all of her stories of this place, so doesn’t think twice about stripping down to use the shower on the porch of the guest house to his plantation.  What he doesn’t realize is that the guest house is now inhabited by Casey Reddick, and he unknowingly gives her quite a show!  This opening scene sets the stage for hilarity, drama, and falling in love. This Chick Read: Vengeful Love: Black Diamonds by Laura Carter

I would like to preface this review with a personal note.  I met Laura Carter, the author of this series, at the RT Convention in Las Vegas last month.  She and I shared a bench while quickly wolfing down vegetable wraps, (that cost a mint!).  I saw that she was wearing a black badge that stated she was an author, and struck up a conversation.  I have to say, the people, authors and readers, at this convention were very warm and approachable.  The ladies I met, talked to, and made friends with, were from all walks of life.  Having that one thing in common, books, really broke down the walls that we usually hide ourselves behind.  Books are a wonderful ice breaker!  Laura, as I stated above, was no exception to the rule.  She was lovely, friendly, Continue reading “This Chick Read: Vengeful Love: Black Diamonds by Laura Carter”

This Chick Read: The Great Zoo of China by Matthew Reilly

This book was the best action movie I have ever read.  Yes, you read that right! And why hasn’t this been made into a movie Mr. Spielberg?   As the  book was picked for my book club to read and talk about, that was the first thing out of our mouths…why isn’t this a movie yet?  Ok, there are similarities to Jurassic Park, but there were enough differences that I think someone should take that chance.  The excitement literally started about 25 pages in, and it, did, not, stop!   Continue reading “This Chick Read: The Great Zoo of China by Matthew Reilly”

This Chick Read: My American Duchess by Eloisa James

Merry, the plucky American heroine in My American Duchess, has broken two engagements at home in Boston, and comes to England to hopefully meet her future husband.  Just as she gets engaged for the third time, she meets a strange man on a balcony at a ball and feels an instant connection with him.  The Duke of Trent is fascinated by this outspoken, charismatic woman and decides instantly to marry her.  Unfortunately for him, she is already engaged… to his twin brother Continue reading “This Chick Read: My American Duchess by Eloisa James”

This Chick Read: The Moment of Everything by Shelly King

Lately, I have been looking for books to read that are about small book stores, after reading  two fabulous books, The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry and The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend.  I had read about The Moment of Everything, previously, and thought that it looked interesting. Unemployed, Maggie Dupres spends all of her time in The Dragonfly’s Used Book store, dreaming of better days and reading bodice ripper, romance novels. Nora Roberts delivers a fabulous thriller/love story in The Obsession.  Naomi Bowes discovers at the age of 12, when she follows her father in the woods, that he has been hiding a secret.  He has been abducting women, holding them for days, raping and torturing and then murdering these women.  Naomi, helps her fathers latest victim escape, and leading her to the police, who arrest and imprison him.  Continue reading “This Chick Read: The Obsession by Nora Roberts”

This Chick Read: Night Shift (Midnight Texas #3) by Charlaine Harris

Midnight, Texas, has become the crossroads that people are drawn to to kill themselves.  Why?  We find out in this eye opening third novel in the Midnight Texas series. This series has gotten progressively more fascinating, drawing us into caring for these characters by revealing them a bit at a time.  In the last book, we found out Olivia’s true occupation, and in book 3, we see Fiji grow even further into her powers Continue reading “This Chick Read: Night Shift (Midnight Texas #3) by Charlaine Harris”

This Chick Read: To Scotland with Love by Patience Griffin

This novel had what appeared to be the romance trifecta- a woman overcoming heartbreak, a change of scenery to Scotland, and a gorgeous kilt wearing Alpha male.  Who wouldn’t want to check this one out?  Journalist Caitie MacLeod, newly divorced, confidence low, escapes to her hometown in Scotland after many years away.   Continue reading “This Chick Read: To Scotland with Love by Patience Griffin”

This Chick Read: Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld

I will admit, that even though I was an English major, I have never read a Jane Austen book  (American Lit and creative writing minors!).  I have, however, watched the movie, Pride and Prejudice, a couple different versions even. I was familiar enough with the characters and references that I don’t think I missed a thing, with this modern retelling of that story.  I will say though, that even if you haven’t read, or watched(!) Pride and Prejudice, I think you will enjoy Curtis Sittenfelds quick wit, hilarious characterizations, and the ability to string words together in a way that feels a little formal while still is relevant to how we communicate today.
