This Chick Read: The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman

Librarians- A secret society of super spies sent out into alternate universes to collect great works of fiction and bring them back into the safety of the Library.  How do we sign up?  The Invisible Library is the first book in a series that has infinite possibilities and alternate universes to explore.  In this one, we follow Irene, a mid level Librarian and her associate in training, Kai, into a world to find and bring back a version of Grimm’s fairy tales, and it turns out that they are not the only ones searching for it.  Through Irene and Kai, we explore this turn of the century London, that is part steam punk, part fantasy and 100%  fun!

As this was the first book in the series, the author spent a good bit of time setting the scene for what these Librarians do, but as soon as they entered London, this book took off delivering a great mystery and a lot of action adventure.

As this was a book about collecting books, there were a lot of references to literary fiction,  Vale, a private detective that they pair up with, certainly was styled after Sherlock Holmes, with Singh, a policeman, his Watson, or perhaps Irene even fitting this role.  This did not detract from my enjoyment in reading this book, because the city of London itself was unlike any characterization I’ve read before.  This London’s universe was filled with magical chaos, mechanical creatures, floating dirigibles, and a solid good vs. evil plot.  Oh yeah, and a couple of possible future romantic interests for Irene?  I’m definitely coming back for the second book!

This book has been released in the UK, but has its US release set for June 14, 2016.  I was given an ARC to read by the publisher, Berkley Publishing Group, through NetGalley for my honest and unbiased review.
