It’s Monday, what are you reading? (10/24/22)

What a fabulous week! What can I say, I love pumpkin spice latte’s, fall weather, and the colorful foliage! I also love spending my weekends reading good books and I’ve definitely been taking advantage of that! I’ve been reading ahead to get some of my commitments taken care and some new releases are stacking up in my kindle. Here’s what I’ve been reading.

JUST FINISHED

Wow, what a gorgeous cover! This fantasy novel is the third in The Fallen Empire series and whereas you could pick it up and read it without reading the other two, you would get some context towards these two characters back story if you read the second book in the series. I really enjoyed how the author made me like a character that was pretty reprehensible in the last book. I was wondering how she was going to do that!

JUST STARTED

I find these Bromance Book Club novels charming and am definitely half in love with the hero even before this book started. Colton is an aw shucks heartthrob and he has his work cut out for him with a self confident and cautious Gretchen. I just started it but love these two together already.

I’ll admit, I’m in a light-hearted mood when it comes to books. Are you reading something more serious and interesting? Give that book a shout out in the comments!

Happy Monday and happy reading!

Deb

It’s Monday, what are you reading? (10/17/22)

It’s the best feeling when you read a few good books in a row, isn’t it? I’ve been reading a little bit for pleasure and a little bit of advanced copies and it’s been a great mix of genre’s and story’s. I’ve felt my want to read increase because I haven’t had a dud in a while. Here’s what’s on my tbr.

JUST FINISHED

I only recently discovered Jackie Lau when reading Donut Fall in Love, which I really liked. The Stand-Up Groomsman is the second book in the series and again, I really enjoyed this book. The characters felt real to me, with real personal problems. I identified with some of what they both felt, and also spent a good bit of time laughing at their antics. Mel is such a great character and I enjoyed he and Vivian’s story.

JUST STARTED

I have a love for historical romances and Sarah MacLean is one of my favorite author’s in this genre. Her heroine’s don’t need to be rescued and in fact are the ones usually rescuing someone. I just started this book but it’s off to a great start and I’m really liking Adelaide. We’ll see where she leads me!

If you feel like sharing the books you’re currently reading, please do! I’d love to add some new novels to my TBR.

Have a great Monday and happy reading!

Deb

It’s Monday, what are you reading? (10/10/22)

It’s my favorite time of year when the weather is fantastic and there are too many great books to read. This last week, besides working, I also enjoyed a bit of the beautiful weather, AND read some great books. HA! Who says you can’t do it all?!!

JUST FINISHED

What a fun novel! It was poignant, funny, and oh so sweet. I will be writing a review soon, but let’s just say that this one did not disappoint.

JUST STARTED

I plan to start this book as soon as I stop writing tonight. It’s a romantic fantasy and looks like a lot of fun! I can’t wait to dig in.

Did anyone get outside this week or did you hunker down on the couch with a good book? I hope it was a good one!

Happy Monday and happy reading!

Deb

This Chicks Sunday Commentary: My Top 5 Most Anticipated Book Releases- Oct’22

Ok, I know it’s Wednesday and I’m a week late getting this post out, but it’s never too late to talk book releases, right??? I know I say this every month, but boy! There are a lot of books coming out next month that I really want to read. Somehow, I’ve narrowed them down to 5.

#5 BOOK RELEASE

I thought Jackie Lau’s book Donut Fall in Love was a cute light-hearted romance and am looking forward to seeing a couple of characters from that novel achieve their hea. This one intrigues me, but I’ll admit it’s not going to be War and Peace. Sometimes you need a light-hearted book to get you through a tough week!

Synopsis: They say to never meet your heroes, but when Vivian Liao’s roommate gets engaged to her favorite actor’s costar, she has no choice but to come face-to-face with Melvin Lee again. He’s just as funny and handsome as he is on-screen…but thinks she is a snob and a sellout. It’s none of his business how she chooses to live her life, no matter how charismatic he is.

Mel is used to charming audiences as an actor and stand-up comedian but can’t connect to Vivian. She’s a smart, talented artist—which is why he thinks she’s wasting her life as a corporate finance drone. The only thing uniting them is their goal for the wedding to go off without a hitch.

As they collaborate on wedding cake and karaoke parties, Mel realizes he might have seriously misjudged this bridesmaid, while Vivian discovers the best man might just be as dazzling off-screen as he is on. With the wedding underway, maybe more than one happily ever after is in the future.

#4 BOOK RELEASE

Sophie Cousens has written some of my favorite more poignant novels over the last couple of years. This book sounds like a little soul-searching and a lot of romance. I hope.

Synopsis:  Head-in-the-stars Audrey is about to marry down-to-earth Josh. Though they are polar opposites, they have a healthy, stable relationship; Josh is just what Audrey needs. But romance should be unpredictable and full of fireworks, and as the big day approaches, Audrey’s found herself wondering if Josh really is “The One.”

So, when Josh’s sister shows up to the rehearsal dinner with Fred, Audrey’s “What If? guy”—the man she met six years ago and had one amazing day with—Audrey finds herself torn. Surely Fred’s appearance the night before she is due to get married can’t be a coincidence. And when everything that could go wrong with the wedding starts to go wrong, Audrey has to ask herself: Is fate trying to stop her from making a huge mistake? Or does destiny just have a really twisty sense of humor?

#3 BOOK RELEASE

I have read several books by Mimi Matthews including the first book in this series. I enjoy the real-ness of her characters. I can’t wait to see how this book surprises me.

Synopsis: A London heiress rides out to the wilds of the English countryside to honor a marriage of convenience with a mysterious and reclusive stranger.

Tall, dark, and dour, the notorious Captain Jasper Blunt was once hailed a military hero, but tales abound of his bastard children and his haunted estate in Yorkshire. What he requires now is a rich wife to ornament his isolated ruin, and he has his sights set on the enchanting Julia Wychwood.

For Julia, an incurable romantic cursed with a crippling social anxiety, navigating a London ballroom is absolute torture. The only time Julia feels any degree of confidence is when she’s on her horse. Unfortunately, a young lady can’t spend the whole of her life in the saddle, so Julia makes an impetuous decision to take her future by the reins—she proposes to Captain Blunt.

In exchange for her dowry and her hand, Jasper must promise to grant her freedom to do as she pleases. To ride—and to read—as much as she likes without masculine interference. He readily agrees to her conditions, with one provision of his own: Julia is forbidden from going into the tower rooms of his estate and snooping around his affairs. But the more she learns of the beastly former hero, the more intrigued she becomes…

#2 BOOK RELEASE

The long-awaited 4th novel in the Kingmaker Chronicles is out this month! I’ve re-read the series, gearing up for Jocasta and Finn’s story. I Can’t Wait!

Synopsis:

THE WAR OF GODS IS JUST BEGINNING

After centuries of conflict, the three kingdoms of Thalyria have finally been reunited. But now the queen has been cursed, the royal lineage has been broken, and no one knows who’s behind the plot to threaten the once-fractured realm’s fragile new peace.

Desperate to help, Jocasta—the king’s younger sister and a gifted healer—hatches a daring plan to find Circe’s Garden, a fabled island where she hopes to discover an antidote. But she can’t do it alone. She needs the strong arm and unflinching bravery of the warrior she’s loved since childhood—her brother’s right-hand-man and captain of the guard, Flynn of Sinta.

Flynn has spent years fighting to deny the desperate longing burning between them, but he cannot allow Jocasta to face this danger alone. He swears he will be her shield, and together they will do the impossible. Yet with old feelings blazing bright and treachery brewing on Mount Olympus, one thing is clear: Thalyria and its new royals are still pawns in an epic game of power—one that might end in a War of Gods.

MOST ANTICIPATED OCTOBER’22 BOOK RELEASE

Part thriller, all drama, Mad Honey looks like a book that I need to schedule a weekend to read. I know I’m not going to be able to put this one down!

Synopsis: Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business.

Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

And for just a short while, these new beginnings are exactly what Olivia and Lily need. Their paths cross when Asher falls for the new girl in school, and Lily can’t help but fall for him, too. With Ash, she feels happy for the first time. Yet at times, she wonders if she can trust him completely. . . .

Then one day, Olivia receives a phone call: Lily is dead, and Asher is being questioned by the police. Olivia is adamant that her son is innocent. But she would be lying if she didn’t acknowledge the flashes of his father’s temper in Ash, and as the case against him unfolds, she realizes he’s hidden more than he’s shared with her.

Mad Honey is a riveting novel of suspense, an unforgettable love story, and a moving and powerful exploration of the secrets we keep and the risks we take in order to become ourselves.

This Chicks Sunday Commentary: Can you compartmentalize your feelings for an author from the book’s they have written?

My entire last week was spent reading the same book. A 900+ behemoth and the sixth book in a series, The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith aka J. K. Rowling. I love this series, but I’ll admit I too have mixed feelings about reading a book written by an author who has made transphobic remarks. I don’t agree with her remarks at all and knowing her feelings, it’s hard not to read one of her books without keeping an eye out towards any hidden agendas or feelings.

J. K. Rowling known for the uber popular Harry Potter novels in my eyes ruined her rep as a beloved novelist a couple of years ago and despite my anger towards her beliefs did not wait to pick up the most recent novel in the Cormoran Strike series. Do I feel bad about supporting this author by reading her novels? Yeah. How do I rationalize it to myself? I really don’t do much rationalizing although I didn’t purchase the book but borrowed a copy through the library, so I can feel kind of good about that. Why do I keep reading her books? I feel like I’ve developed a relationship with these characters and it’s hard to not read their story to its conclusion. I’m invested. Just like I”m invested in Harry Potter and the Fantastic Beasts movie franchise. But, I do feel like I should be shouting out my pro-trans and LGBTQ+ feelings just to disassociate myself from someone who uses her power for ill.

Here’s a question, are you better at separating yourself from authors, actors, politician’s, whomever! Do you sit quietly and stew? Join protest marches? Don’t buy their books and go to movies? How evil does someone have to get before it causes a reaction from you? I’ll admit, during a political season I will get off my couch and vote to try to keep someone I disagree with intensely from holding office but an author who lives a continent away? I am disenchanted, yes. I still picked up the book and read it- although I didn’t buy it. I will also be writing a review which is a way of supporting sales for that book, or not depending on what I thought of it. I wouldn’t vote her into our government, that’s for sure.

I use J. K. Rowling as an example because I’ve just finished this book, but there are many popular figures that this thought could be applied to. I obviously have mixed feelings and so I thought I’d just open this thought up for discussion, if any of you should like to make a comment and let me know your thoughts.

It’s Monday, what are you reading? (9/5/22)

If you live in the US, I hope you have a wonderful day off from work, if you were lucky enough to have the day off. I do, and added on to my long weekend with a couple of extra days, so I’m really enjoying the time to relax and read. Here’s what I’ve been spending my time with.

JUST FINISHED

Ruby Fever came out a few weeks ago, and yes, I had already read this book. I love following up my initial read by listening to Ilona Andrews novels because I find that the nuances in hearing someone narrate the story give me more insight and enjoyment, catching variation in the plot that I may have missed when reading the novel. It was definitely the case with Ruby Fever. Listening turned my 4 star review into a 5 for the audiobook.

JUST STARTED

The fifteenth novel in the series is just as action-packed as the first, if not more so! This book has so much going on that you just don’t want to put it down. Beware! You will sit and read this one in one day!

How are you choosing to spend your Monday? I hope it’s a good one!

Deb

It’s Monday, what are you reading? (8/29/22)

As you get older the birthday’s that I always looked forward to when I was younger become more daunting. Yesterday was my birthday and I again faced my aging body and face in the mirror. Yes, I’m carrying some extra weight and have started to get lines next to my eyes but I still faced this day celebrating the fact that I’m healthy and have a great life. I enjoyed my celebration with my husband and my family. I also gave myself some time to relax and start a new book. Of course, I did!

JUST FINISHED

I received an ARC of this book and despite the fun premise, I felt a little let down by the writing and the characters. I’ll tell you a bit more in my review.

JUST STARTED

This cover is a little creepy, isn’t it? I usually love Elise Kova’s covers, but this one is not my favorite. Luckily, it’s book 3 in the series and I didn’t need to see the cover to want to read the book. LOL. I just started it but I’m enjoying how unique this story is and am thrilled with the development of the characters.

I hope you all had a great weekend, and happy Monday!

This Chicks Sunday Commentary: My Top 5 Book Releases – Sept’22

There are some really interesting books coming out in September but I’ve narrowed my list down to the Top 5 books I’m most interested in reading. It’s a varied group of novels by some authors that I know and love to read. Here’s my top 5!

#5 BOOK RELEASE

ok, Sally Thorne is a supremely talented author, I loved The Second First Impressions and The Hating Game. They were both very clever. This re-do of the story of Dr. Frankenstein’s sister falling in love with the man they make could go either way- great or horrible. I’ll let you know what I think after I read it!

Synopsis:

For generations, every Frankenstein has found their true love and equal, unlocking lifetimes of blissful wedded adventure. Clever, pretty (and odd) Angelika Frankenstein has run out of suitors and fears she may become the exception to this family rule. When assisting in her brother Victor’s ground-breaking experiment to bring a reassembled man back to life, she realizes that having an agreeable gentleman convalescing in the guest suite might be a chance to let a man get to know the real her. For the first time, Angelika embarks upon a project that is all her own.

When her handsome scientific miracle sits up on the lab table, her hopes for an instant romantic connection are thrown into disarray. Her resurrected beau (named Will for the moment) has total amnesia and is solely focused on uncovering his true identity. Trying to ignore their heart-pounding chemistry, Angelika reluctantly joins the investigation into his past, hoping it will bring them closer. But when a second suitor emerges to aid their quest, Angelika wonders if she was too hasty inventing a solution. Perhaps fate is not something that can be influenced in a laboratory? Or is Will (or whatever his name is!) her dream man, tailored for her in every way? And can he survive what was done to him in the name of science, and love?

Filled with carriages, candlesticks, and corpses, Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match is the spooky-season reimagining of the well-known classic that reminds us to never judge a man by his cadaver!

#4 BOOK RELEASE

This book has two things putting it on my TBR. I really enjoy this author’s books and I love an enemies to lovers trope! I’ve got high hopes for this romance and I hope it hits the mark.

Synopsis: Max Boyson looks good…from a distance. But up close and personal, the tattooed hottie Joelle Prima has been crushing on for the past year and half has turned into the prime example of why you shouldn’t judge a book by his delectable cover.

When she first learned about the massive renovation to the building they share, Joelle imagined that temporarily combining her Filipino bakery with Max’s neighboring bookstore would be the perfect opening chapter to their happily ever after. In her fantasies they fed each other bibingka and pandesal while discussing Jane Austen and cooing over her pet hamster, Pumpkin. Reality, however…is quite different. Her gallant prince turned out to be a stubborn toad who snaps at her in front of customers, dries his wet clothes in her oven, and helps himself to the yummy pastries in her display case without asking.

But beneath Max’s grumpy glares, Joelle senses a rising heat—and a softening heart. And when they discover the real reason for the renovation, they’ll have to put both their business senses and their feelings for each other to the test.

#3 BOOK RELEASE

Does Jasmine Guillory know how to write a fun romance novel or what? I pick up her books confident in the knowledge that I’m going to like the characters and root for the story. This novel is ringing my bell and I have the feeling it will not disappoint.

Synopsis: Margot Noble needs some relief from the stress of running the family winery with her brother. Enter Luke: sexy, charming, and best of all in the too-small world of Napa, a stranger. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and Margot is delighted that she lucked into the perfect one-night stand she’ll never have to see again. That is, until the winery’s newest hire, Luke, walks in the next morning. Margot is determined to keep things purely professional, but when their every interaction reminds her of the attraction still bubbling between them, it proves to be much more challenging than she expects.

Luke Williams had it all, but when he quits his high-salary tech job in Silicon Valley in a blaze of burnout and moves back to Napa to help a friend, he realizes he doesn’t want to tell the world—or his mom—why he’s now working at a winery. His mom loves bragging about her successful son—how can he admit that the job she’s so proud of broke him? Luke has no idea what is next for him, but one thing is certain: he wants more from the incredibly smart and sexy woman he hooked up with—even after he learns she’s his new boss. But even if they can find a way to be together that wouldn’t be an ethical nightmare, would such a successful woman really want a tech-world dropout?

#2 BOOK RELEASE

Book #15 in the series and I’m still as in love with these characters as I was on book #5. Jane is one of those heroines who you want to be like but at the same wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley. She rocks! I can’t wait to read this newest installment.

Synopsis:

Jane Yellowrock is the queen of the vampires, and that makes her a target as she fights to maintain control and keep peace in the city of New Orleans. She has enemies at every turn, because vampires live forever, and they keep their grudges alive with them. That includes the Heir, the vampire sire of the Pellissier bloodline, which gave rise to Leo Pellissier himself—Jane’s old boss and the former master of the city.

With the Heir and all the forces of darkness he can muster arrayed against her, Jane will need all the help she can get. She’ll find it in her city, her friends, her found family, and, of course, the Beast inside of her.

TOP BOOK RELEASE OF SEPT’22

I love a good gothic novel and if you add vampires into the mix, I’m going to give it a try! This novel looks eery, mysterious, and sexy. Perfect for a fall day of reading.

Synopsis:

Marion Shaw has been raised in the slums, where want and deprivation are all she know. Despite longing to leave the city and its miseries, she has no real hope of escape until the day she spots a peculiar listing in the newspaper seeking a bloodmaid.

Though she knows little about the far north—where wealthy nobles live in luxury and drink the blood of those in their service—Marion applies to the position. In a matter of days, she finds herself the newest bloodmaid at the notorious House of Hunger. There, Marion is swept into a world of dark debauchery. At the center of it all is Countess Lisavet.

The countess, who presides over this hedonistic court, is loved and feared in equal measure. She takes a special interest in Marion. Lisavet is magnetic, and Marion is eager to please her new mistress. But when she discovers that the ancient walls of the House of Hunger hide even older secrets, Marion is thrust into a vicious game of cat and mouse. She’ll need to learn the rules of her new home—and fast—or its halls will soon become her grave.

These are, of course, the top 5 based upon my own reading taste. Is there a book that I should be reading that isn’t on my list? Let me know in the comments!

Happy reading!

It’s Monday, what are you reading? (8/15/22)

OK, funny story. My husband and I are listening to the Innkeeper series by Ilona Andrews while we walk the dog every morning. It’s the graphic audio version which means there are sound effects and a whole cast of voice actors and is advertised as a movie in your mind. It really does sound like a movie and we’re having a great time listening to the series. One morning last week we finally reached a point where our main character, Dina, gets kissed by the man/werewolf she’s fallen in love with, and the sound effects of sucking face was absolutely hilarious. We were dying of laughter while walking the dog and needless to say once they progressed beyond kissing I quickly hit that fast forward button. I don’t need graphic audio sound effects, for those moments, thank you very much. However, I’ll always remember that moment when we looked at each other in horror and then started laughing. 🙂

JUST FINISHED

I read this book when it first came out and was curious how I’d feel about it on a re-read. I still liked it!

JUST STARTED

I’m only about 15% into the book, but I can tell that the author really had fun writing this one. It’s a different type of novel than her usual historical fiction but I can tell that it will be just as well written.

Happy Monday and happy reading!

Deb

It’s Monday, what are you reading? (8/8/22)

It’s that time of the week where I share the books that I’ve been reading and hope for you all to chime in with your own fabulous titles. I’m currently in the midst of a fantasy mystery series that’s listed on Kindle Unlimited and I’ll admit that I’m enjoying the characters and this world the author created. Have you ever read the same genre 2-3 books in a row and feel that buzz or need for a change in genre? I’m feeling that right now, so my next book will definitely switch things up. I don’t want to bore everyone so I’m going to give you the title I read prior to me starting this series, but between you and me, I’ve read all the books before the one I list below. 🙂

JUST FINISHED

I’m a fan of Lucy Score’s small town romance novels and this one was really cute. It has a great premise and the characters are funny, cute, and charming. What more do you want out of a lighthearted read?

JUST STARTED

The cover makes the main character look like she’s a character in Robin Hood but she’s actually an investigator for what passes for their police force. It’s a fun and fast- moving series.

What books have gotten their hooks in your mind recently?

Happy Monday and happy reading!
