Shelly Laurenston is a paranormal romance author, whose past books feature men and women who turn into lions and tigers and bears, oh my! As a fan of paranormal romances, one of my biggest pet peeves is a shifter romance that makes the story only about the romance. Because it’s not weird enough that we are reading books about wolves and panthers having relationships (insert “sex” here), right? Ms. Laurenston writes exactly those kind of books! BUT, the difference is that the story actually has a plot, other than the main characters relationship, although, don’t get me wrong, it’s a big part of it. I am now coming out of the closet to say, yes, I have read ALL of Shelly Laurenston’s books, and am, actually a huge fan! Her writing is hilarious! The characters are unique, beyond breaking out furry once in awhile. They may not be for everyone, but if the writing is good, funny, and you care about what happens with the characters, I can go with a plot that revolves around a siberian Tiger/polar bear hybrid who also plays hockey. That guy was hysterical! Ok, different book, but my point is, get over it. She’s a good writer!
Ok, on to The Undoing. This series is a little different, in that it is based upon Viking lore, which I am not too familiar with. Jace Berisha is a Crow. Crows are women who have been murdered in their first life, but a Viking Goddesss gave her a second life as a Crow. A warrior woman who deals out justice. Now this being a Shelly Laurenston book, she does actually turn into a crow, and a woman warrior with talons and wings. Cool! Jace is not your typical crow. She isn’t in a Crow clique, and in fact, isn’t very out going, which all Crows usually are. She loves to read and can speak multiple languages. Jace ends up getting hired by the Protectors, a more calm race of Owl like men. Picture heads being able to rotate backwards, and that long eyed stare. Ski Eriksen, a very handsome Viking, is taken with Jace, and loves the fact that she’d rather have her head buried in a book than get wasted at a party. Their two groups (flights?) are brought together when someone starts killing off people, and they discover that it is an ancient evil that they thought had been vanquished. Jace, and her ability to speak multiple languages, becomes instrumental in helping them send her back to Hell. In the midst of all this murder and mayhem is a sweet love story between two people who turn into birds. Lol. Seriously.
If you have never picked up a Shelly Laurenston book, and like the paranormal genre, then try the first book in the series, The Unleashing. If you don’t like this genre, well, this book probably isn’t for you. I promise, if you do read it, you will find yourself laughing out loud, and rooting for Jace and Ski.
