This Chick Read: Idol (VIP #1) by Kristen Callihan

Kristen Callihan has written both fantasy and sports romances, and excelled at them.  Idol is her first romance set in the rock world.  Killian, on a break from his band because his best friend and band member tried to commit suicide.  Killian was devastated, blaming himself for not seeing the signs, and also was angry that his friend was hurting so much and he didn’t come to him for help.  He rents a house in the countryside, and on his first night there gets drunk and crashes his vehicle through Libby’s gate and then proceeds to throw up all over her.  Love at first sight.  Well, maybe not! This Chick Read: P.S. I Like You by Kasie West

P.S. I Like You is a straight up young adult romance.  If you follow my blog, you know I like YA books, but usually they are in the fantasy genre, or historical.  This book is a contemporary romance set in high school, which I will admit, was a long time ago for me.  However, I received this book in my Uppercase Box book club of the month and cracked it open yesterday. I listened to the author, Kasie West’s video where she talked about her idea of writing a romance without all of the technology available to them today.  No texts, email, video, etc.  I thought, ok, that is like how it was when I was in High School.  Back in the good old days, when you passed notes and wrote letters. This Chick Read: Magic Binds (Kate Daniels) by Ilona Andrews

Kate Daniels is my ideal fantasy heroine.  She is selfless, strong, honorable and has a great sense of right and wrong.  In Magic Binds, she is all of those things, but the power that has been increasing within her, causes her to struggle, hard, to remain her true self.  She fights to retain her sense of self and pick the right road, instead of the easier road.  The plot centers around her father, Roland, who kidnaps Saiman.  Kate, even though she doesn’t like Saiman much, has to come up with a plan to steal him back.  If she doesn’t, it will set a precedent for others to harm or steal, infringing upon her territory.  She needs to send a message.  Don’t mess with Atlanta, it is my territory. This Chick Read: Let It Shine by Alyssa Cole

Let it Shine is an interracial historical romance novella that takes place during the Civil Rights movement in 1961.  It is effectively told from two perspectives, Sofronia, the young African American heroine, and Ivan, her Jewish love interest.  Sofronia and Ivan meet again, after not seeing each other since childhood.  Her mother was a maid in the Friedman’s house, and Sofie and Ivan used to play together as children.  After her mother’s death, one that shapes both of their lives, they don’t see each other until they meet by chance at a meeting organizing non violent protests. This Chick Read: Walk on Earth a Stranger (Gold Seer Trilogy #1) by Rae Carson

This novel is a tough one to categorize.  It is definitely a Young Adult novel, but does not fall completely in the fantasy category as the title would lead you to believe.  Although, this first book sets us up for a great future fantasy series, Walk on Earth a Stranger read as more of a historical novel.  It takes place during the Gold Rush, when hopeful men and women made the trek across country, led by stories of golden nuggets just sitting on the ground waiting to be picked up.  I grew up in California, and this part of its history has always fascinated me.  I am also a fan of fantasy and was interested to see how Rae Carson was going to mix these two genres together. This Chick Read: The Masked City (The Invisible Library) by Genevieve Cogman

The Masked City takes up where The Invisible Library leaves off.  Irene and Kai are living in Vale’s world investigating a mysterious fae that was after the same book as they. Attacked by thugs, then separated as she follows a lead, Kai ends up being abducted and taken to another world, chained in a dungeon.  As his mentor and friend, Irene ventures into this chaotic world to help save Kai before his dragon family decides to eliminate the fae who took him and the world they were living in, including the innocent humans inhabiting it. This Chick Read: Ice Like Fire (Snow Like Ashes #2) by Sara Raasch

This Chick Read: Destined for a King: Bastard Brotherhood by Ashlyn Macnamara

Destined for a King is a historical romance combined with an earthy mythology reminiscent of an Arthurian tale.  Calista Thorne, the daughter of Blackbriar Keep, has been told her whole life that her destiny is to be married to a king, and in fact she is promised to one.  When Blackbriar Keep is set upon by a band of warriors intent on taking over, she picks up a bow and arrow and unbeknownst to her, shoots their leader, Torch, with a poisoned arrow.  When he comes down with a mysterious illness, she must heal him, or her father will be killed. This Chick Read: Prophecy by Lea Kirk

Earth is attacked by an alien race, and billions of humans are annihilated.  Some are captured and brought aboard spaceships to be sold as slaves.  In a holding cell, a small group of humans and a small group of Matirans, join together to escape their captors.  While doing this, two of them, one Human, and one Matiran, discover that they are prophesied to be together to unify their two races and bring peace to their people.  

I was very pleasantly surprised at how well this novel was written.  The plot was developed thoroughly, the language the aliens spoke was not too different than ours which helped humanize them, and the characters were very likable.  Alexandra Bock, finds herself mysteriously drawn to Gryf, fights it briefly but their circumstances draw them together.   Gryf was such a likable guy!  His every action was for the better of the group and totally selfless.  He was a hard guy to hate.  Luckily, although an alien, anatomically, and physically, Matirans were very humanoid.  The only difference being their blue skin.  I could overlook blue skin for a well built, all around handsome, good guy!  Their enemy is extremely unlikeable, which makes me root for Alex and Gryf even more.  This is a classic tale of good versus evil, falling in love with an alien and saving two planets.  Seriously, though, it was a good book!

If you like romances with a bit of a science fiction twist, this was a good one!  This is the first book I’ve read by Lea Kirk, but it won’t be my last!
