Feyre, hunting in the forest to feed her starving family, comes upon a wolf who is about to capture the deer her family desperately needs to survive, and kills it. The wolf is a faerie in disguise, and his death breaks a treaty between faery and humans. Feyre has to go live in Prythian in order to honor the treaty that she did not know she had broken. Tamlin, the lord who brings her to his magical land lets her live in his castle, where she learns that all is not as it appears. He and his people are under a curse, part of which requires them to wear masks that they can never take off, and which they can not speak of to her.
