This Chick Read: Pathfinder’s Way by T. A. White

This is a wonderful fantasy adventure novel that introduces us to a new type of adventurer, the Pathfinder. Shea belongs to the Pathfinder’s Guild, a job that she was raised to do from the age of 10. She has more experience traveling than others in her world, who may be at a more advanced age. She creates maps of her journeys, and her experiences with dangerous beasts and creatures, makes her guidance invaluable.  Unfortunately, she is a woman, and in her village, where she has been placed, the elders think they know better than she. This Chick Read: First Star I See Tonight (Chicago Stars #8) by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

The Chicago Stars series is so much fun, and I was really looking forward to reading the latest novel.  It did not disappoint!  Piper Dove and Cooper Graham were not looking for love.  In fact, they were both kind of prickly!  Cooper, a just retired quarterback for the Chicago Stars, has opened a nightclub, and wants to expand to several.  Piper is a private investigator, hired to check him out.  When they meet, sparks fly, and not the good kind!  It’s not until a third into the book, that she starts to intrigue Cooper.  He slowly starts to pursue her, but Piper has a lot of baggage. This Chick Read: Idol (VIP #1) by Kristen Callihan

Kristen Callihan has written both fantasy and sports romances, and excelled at them.  Idol is her first romance set in the rock world.  Killian, on a break from his band because his best friend and band member tried to commit suicide.  Killian was devastated, blaming himself for not seeing the signs, and also was angry that his friend was hurting so much and he didn’t come to him for help.  He rents a house in the countryside, and on his first night there gets drunk and crashes his vehicle through Libby’s gate and then proceeds to throw up all over her.  Love at first sight.  Well, maybe not! This Chick Read: P.S. I Like You by Kasie West

P.S. I Like You is a straight up young adult romance.  If you follow my blog, you know I like YA books, but usually they are in the fantasy genre, or historical.  This book is a contemporary romance set in high school, which I will admit, was a long time ago for me.  However, I received this book in my Uppercase Box book club of the month and cracked it open yesterday. I listened to the author, Kasie West’s video where she talked about her idea of writing a romance without all of the technology available to them today.  No texts, email, video, etc.  I thought, ok, that is like how it was when I was in High School.  Back in the good old days, when you passed notes and wrote letters. (Gasp!). Continue reading “This Chick Read: P.S. I Like You by Kasie West”

About All Laced Up:

Everyone loves hockey superstar Pierce Miller. Everyone except Lia Bailey.

When the two are forced to teach a skating class to save the rink, Lia’s not sure she’ll survive the pressure of Nationals and Pierce’s ego. Not only can’t he remember her name, he signed her bottle of water like she was one of his groupies. Ugh.

But if there’s one thing Lia knows better than figure skating, it’s hockey. Hoping to take his ego down a notch—or seven—she logs into his team website under an anonymous name to give him pointers on his less-than-stellar playing.

Turns out, Pierce isn’t arrogant at all. And they have a lot in common. Too bad he’s falling for the anonymous girl online. No matter how much fun they’re starting to have in real life, she’s afraid he’s going to choose fake-Lia over the real one…

Disclaimer: This book contains a swoony hockey player (and his equally swoony friends!), one-too-many social media accounts, kisses that’ll melt ice, and a secret identity that might not be so secret after all…

This Chick Read: Magic Binds (Kate Daniels) by Ilona Andrews

Kate Daniels is my ideal fantasy heroine.  She is selfless, strong, honorable and has a great sense of right and wrong.  In Magic Binds, she is all of those things, but the power that has been increasing within her, causes her to struggle, hard, to remain her true self.  She fights to retain her sense of self and pick the right road, instead of the easier road.  The plot centers around her father, Roland, who kidnaps Saiman.  Kate, even though she doesn’t like Saiman much, has to come up with a plan to steal him back.  If she doesn’t, it will set a precedent for others to harm or steal, infringing upon her territory.  She needs to send a message.  Don’t mess with Atlanta, it is my territory. This Chick Read: Walk on Earth a Stranger (Gold Seer Trilogy #1) by Rae Carson

This novel is a tough one to categorize.  It is definitely a Young Adult novel, but does not fall completely in the fantasy category as the title would lead you to believe.  Although, this first book sets us up for a great future fantasy series, Walk on Earth a Stranger read as more of a historical novel.  It takes place during the Gold Rush, when hopeful men and women made the trek across country, led by stories of golden nuggets just sitting on the ground waiting to be picked up.  I grew up in California, and this part of its history has always fascinated me.  I am also a fan of fantasy and was interested to see how Rae Carson was going to mix these two genres together.
