This Chick Read: Midnight Soul (Fantasyland Series #5) by Kristen Ashley

When a new Kristen Ashley book gets released, I along with hordes of other fans, immediately purchase the book and move it to the top of our TBR piles.  I did just that with Midnight Soul, as it is the final novel in my favorite, Fantasyland series.  The premise  for these books is that there is an alternate universe to ours, where our double lives.  As each book starts, the female heroine, living on earth, switches places with her counterpart in the alternate universe.  Sometimes it is their choice, and sometimes it is their doubles.  Much drama, angst, fun and hilarity ensue, while these ladies tempt and taunt their destined mate, until each novel ends in connubial bliss.  Midnight Soul is the one caveat to this rule.  You see, Nocturno -Noc to his friends, the only male hero in this series from Earth, does not have a destined mate in this alternate universe.  She is dead.  Part one of the previous books plot.  She was also a lesbian to boot.  So even if she had been alive, she would not have been the lady for him.  He meets Franka, the heroine in this novel, when their group saves their world.  She has also been introduced in past storylines, and she was not a very pleasant character.  Noc, see’s right through that hard mask, and against her will, Franka opens up to him, as she has to no other.

At first I wondered how this pairing was going to work.  Noc, is very much a man of Earth.  He is a jeans and T kind of guy, using slang to express himself.  Franka, one of the nobility of her land, speaks rather high brow, and I wouldn’t think would stoop to his earthy level.  However, it is that exact oppositeness that I thought struck a true note.  Not every couple is going to be a perfect fantasy pairing. Real couples have to work hard to make things work, and Noc and Frankka had some obstacles they both needed to overcome.  This was the most human of all of the books, and seemed a very fitting way to conclude the series.  As with her other couples, their chemistry was fiery from the start, and Franka was sassy and learned to be sweet, which was fun to read.

Ms. Ashley, wrote conclusions for some of my other favorite characters, and if you are a fan, you’ll be happy to read their HEA’s in the epilogue of this book.

Blood of the Earth is a paranormal mystery set in a land full of were-animals, vampires and “other” species.  Faith Hunter has developed this world in her popular Jane Yellowrock series where we were first introduced to the main character Nell Ingram.  Nell, an ex member of a local cult, signs on as a consultant to PsyLED, a paranormal government agency that explores and investigates what the normal agencies can not explain.  PsyLED believes that some kidnappings of young women may be tied to her family’s church group (cult), and as an ex member who still has access through her family, her involvement becomes the key to their success. This Chick Read: Sweet as Sin (Bad Habit book 1) by J.T. Geissinger

I read the premise to this novel and knew I had to read it and see if it was as good as it sounded.  Kat ( I love this name!) is a Hollywood makeup artist who has been hired to do the make-up for a music video for the band Bad Habit.  She meets the lead singer, Nico Nyx (yep, another cool name!) and their attraction to each other is immediate.  Unfortunately, according to all of the gossip rags, he has a girlfriend.  That girlfriend shows up at the video, where she is supposed to play the bride to Nico’s groom, and she is wasted on drugs.  Nico takes advantage of the opportunity and asks Kat to fill in… For $30k. This Chick Read: My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows

My Lady Jane tells a fictional tale of Lady Jane Grey, in history crowned Queen of England for little more than a week, before being beheaded.  These three authors tell a rather different story, using some historical facts such as being crowned Queen, but then veering into fantasy to rewrite Janes’s future, or rather her past, into a happy ending.  This young adult novel was a refreshing change from other fantasy-adventure tales in the genre.  The dialog is filled with satire and humor, some of which is very modern, and told with a sly wink. This Chick Read: Summer House by Nancy Thayer

Summer House tells the story of a few generations of Wheelwright’s who spend every summer together on Nantucket.  Nona, who turns ninety that summer, is now living on the island year round, with her granddaughter Charlotte.  The author very cleverly weaves Nona’s love story with her now dead husband Herb, with the expectations her children have for her grandchildren, as well as telling the love stories of each set of lovers.  As with many other family saga’s I have read, this family has its own dysfunctions that unfold in a very realistic natural way. This Chick Read: All The Missing Girls by Megan Miranda

I will admit that I was somewhat tentative about reading a book backwards because I could not imagine how that would work.  We are introduced to the main character, Nicolette, in present time.  She goes back to her hometown because her brother has asked for her help getting their childhood home ready to sell, to help pay for their fathers living facility.  She has been back in Cooley Ridge for a couple of weeks when a local girl disappears, Continue reading “This Chick Read: All The Missing Girls by Megan Miranda”

This Chick Read: All In by Simona Ahrnstedt

All In is the first foreign language romance novel to be translated and published in America.  As the first, it is a huge event in the publishing world, and every eye will be on how the American reader world reacts to this novel.  I can’t speak for the entire American population, only for myself, but if I needed to describe how I felt while reading this novel I would say I was fascinated, riveted, stunned, emotional, horrified, enraptured and involved.
