This Chick Read: The Trouble With Mistletoe (A Heartbreaker Bay Novel) by Jill Shalvis

I am loving this Heartbreaker Bay series! It’s set in San Francisco where we get to enjoy  learning more about a fun group of friends who work and live in the same neighborhood.  This time the story revolves around Willa, the owner of a pet store / pet boutique / pet wedding planner. Yep, it’s a pet a la mode store. Willa, who we met in Sweet Little Lies, has had a crush on Keane since high school.  Unfortunately, he doesn’t remember her at all, which seriously pisses her off. This Chick Read: Scarred by You by Laura Carter

Dayna Cross and Clark Layton are rivals, each owning a large oil company, competing in that ruthless world. They are not only rivals in business, but they share a personal history. At two separate times in their lives, they had very passionate but brief relationships. Each separation more heartbreaking than the last. Laura Carter writes a realistic, gripping story about the intricacies of the oil business and a heartrending tale of two people who struggle to belong to each other, even though their families try to keep them apart. This Chick Read: Skinwalker (Jane Yellowrock #1) by Faith Hunter

Skinwalker is a paranormal mystery set in urban New Orleans, a very appropriate setting for this genre.  What makes this book different than other paranormal books I’ve read is that our protagonist, Jane Yellowrock, is a Skinwalker and I’ve never read a book where the  Skinwalker wasn’t an evil character.  Skinwalkers can take the shape of any animal, and as Jane takes shape we see her struggle with her inner beast. I found that struggle to be just as interesting as her investigation. She is inhuman, yet that struggle humanizes her and makes her someone we can identify with and like. This Chick Read: Shadow’s End (Elder Races #9) by Thea Harrison

Shadow’s End is the latest novel in the Elder Races series. Thea Harrison has created a world where Elves, Vampires, Djinn and Wyr’s live in territories ruled by Kings, Queens or leaders of their species. This novel is about Graydon, gryphon and First Sentinel to the Wyr and Beluviel, consort to the Elven High Lord. A relationship between the two of them would be forbidden, but 200 years ago they had a dalliance Continue reading “This Chick Read: Shadow’s End (Elder Races #9) by Thea Harrison”

This Chick Read: A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses #2) by Sarah J. Maas

At the end of the first novel, Feyre dies, and all of the High Lords, present at the moment of her death, help re-make her.  She is brought back to life, but it is as an immortal, not as a human.  This novel is about Feyre’s internal struggle.  She killed others in order to save Tamlin, and the Spring Court, but in her mind, she can’t seem to wipe that blood off her hands, a la Lady Macbeth. Out, Out damn spot!  Continue reading “This Chick Read: A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses #2) by Sarah J. Maas”

This Chick’s Audible Review: Prudence by Gail Carriger (read by Moira Quirk)

I have read Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protecterate series and listened to her Etiquette and Espionage series, so when Prudence came out, the first in the Custard Protocol series, I immediately put it on my TBR list. Yep, it took me a year and a half, the impetus being that the second book in this series, Imprudence, is out. I do love being able to quickly move on to the second book! This Chick Read: Promise of Fire (The Kingmaker Chronicles Book 1) by Amanda Bouchet

You know when someone recommends a book to you and you aren’t sure that you want to add it to your TBR list?  My list is huge, but my sister promised that this book was worth moving to the top.  Boy, was she right!  Amanda Bouchet has created a world that is part fantasy, part mythology, and a whole lot of action adventure. Cat, Catalia Fisa, is hiding out in a traveling magical circus. She has disguised herself as a Soothsayer, but her talents are so much more. This Chick Read: All Laced Up by Erin Fletcher

When ice skater Lia agrees to teach a skating class at her skating rink, she never thought that her co-teacher would be Pierce Miller, local celebrity, and probable future NHL player.  All Laced Up is a classic teen romance. Shy and uncertain Lia misunderstands Pierce’s confidence for cockiness.  It isn’t until she starts following him anonymously on a hockey social media site, that she see’s a different side of him. This Chick Read: Pathfinder’s Way by T. A. White

This is a wonderful fantasy adventure novel that introduces us to a new type of adventurer, the Pathfinder. Shea belongs to the Pathfinder’s Guild, a job that she was raised to do from the age of 10. She has more experience traveling than others in her world, who may be at a more advanced age. She creates maps of her journeys, and her experiences with dangerous beasts and creatures, makes her guidance invaluable.  Unfortunately, she is a woman, and in her village, where she has been placed, the elders think they know better than she.
