This Chick Read: The Hunt (The Cage #2) by Megan Shepherd

After their escape failed in The Cage. Cora who had started to have feelings for their Kindred keeper Cassian, found out he was the one that betrayed she Lucky and Mali. A betrayal that was supposed to help enhance the psychic abilities that he thought she had. I’m not sure how that was supposed to enhance abilities, but it certainly pissed Cora off! As a punishment for their escape, she, Lucky, and Mali are put in some sort of Safari themed enclosure where Kindred go to relax and fake kill things. One scene between Lucky and one of the animals particularly struck me (and Lucky!) as sad and awful. Cora, still determined to escape, takes Cassian up on his offer to train her to use her psychic abilities but this time she will use him. She trains and is able to telepathically build her strength and plan an escape for she and her friends.

This book was so disturbing! You have animals living in horrid conditions in the Safari, being shot and healed over and over just so the Kindred can take a break from being automatons and have feelings for an hour. Nok and Ralf the only pair from the first book to actually become pregnant, are set up in a dollhouse and “viewed” at any time of the day by Kindred visitors and tested on by their doctor. Leon is working for a black market crew who trade in body parts. For a young adult book, this one has some seriously warped themes! I did however finish it, because I had to see if that group would finally escape!  I won’t give away the plot, so you’ll have to read it for yourself to find out. I will say that I was disappointed that this storyline will be dragged into a third book. I mean enough already! I haven’t yet decided if I want to see these human teenagers get out of a third disturbing scenario and finally succeed in getting back to Earth.

This book was well written, and some people will love it, I’m sure. Those disturbing images and themes just weren’t for me, and I didn’t love these characters, so I am only giving it ❤❤❤.
