This Chick Read: Missing Pieces by Heather Gudenkauf

What would you do if you went to your husband’s childhood home because the woman who raised him was in the hospital, and everything you thought you knew about him started to unravel.  That is what happened to Sarah Quinlan when she took the trip back to Penny Gate, Iowa with her husband Jack.  Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin books for sending me a pre-release copy of Missing Pieces, and for my lack of sleep last night as I just HAD to know how this book ended.

The following description of the book comes directly from the author’s website, heathergudenkauf.com.

A woman uncovers earth-shattering secrets about her husband’s family in this chilling page-turner from New York Times bestselling author Heather Gudenkauf.

Sarah Quinlan’s husband, Jack, has been haunted for decades by the untimely death of his mother when he was just a teenager, her body found in the cellar of their family farm, the circumstances a mystery. The case rocked the small farm town of Penny Gate, Iowa, where Jack was raised, and for years Jack avoided returning home. But when his beloved aunt Julia is in an accident, hospitalized in a coma, Jack and Sarah are forced to confront the past that they have long evaded.Upon arriving in Penny Gate, Sarah and Jack are welcomed by the family Jack left behind all those years ago—barely a trace of the wounds that had once devastated them all. But as facts about Julia’s accident begin to surface, Sarah realizes that nothing about the Quinlans is what it seems. Caught in a flurry of unanswered questions, Sarah dives deep into the puzzling rabbit hole of Jack’s past. But the farther in she climbs, the harder it is for her to get out. And soon she is faced with a deadly truth she may not be prepared for.

Sarah and Jack have been married for twenty years.  Before she had met Jack, Sarah was an investigative reporter, and those investigative instincts kicked in when she started finding inconsistencies between what Jack had told her about his life in Penny Gate as a youth, and what had actually happened.  You may wonder how he was able to keep these things from his wife for twenty years when I’d imagine her bullshit meter was pretty good.  I certainly did!  But, as a woman, I also know that we may forgive and forget a lot of things when we start dating someone, and when we fall in love.  I’m going to assume that was the case here, otherwise I’d get hung up on that discrepancy, rather than letting myself get immersed in this story.

This is the first book I’ve read by Heather Gudenkauf and I was impressed with how quickly she got this story moving, developed the characters, and with how she was able to twist the plot in a way that it seemed to naturally unfold as Sarah unveiled past truths.  Because all of the characters are intertwined, I’m not going to delve into who I liked, didn’t like, etc, as I don’t want to give any clues that may inadvertently tip you off.  I will give my opinion though.  Read this book, it’s a well crafted puzzle that you’ll be determined to solve.  Beware, if you like to read before going to bed, you may find yourself reading late into the night! This book will be released on 2/2/16.
