This Chick Read: The Little French Guesthouse by Helen Pollard

Emmy books a vacation for she and her boyfriend to a B&B called La Cour des Roses in the French countryside, hoping to regain a little passion and excitement in what has become a rather stale relationship.  Unfortunately for her, he gets caught en flagrante with the B&B owners wife, Gloria, while her husband, Rupert,  is having a heart attack downstairs. Nathan ends up leaving Emmy for Gloria, and Emmy, having the majority of her vacation left and also feeling guilty about Gloria leaving her older, ailing husband behind, stays to help him run La Cour des Roses. This Chick Read: Summer House by Nancy Thayer

Summer House tells the story of a few generations of Wheelwright’s who spend every summer together on Nantucket.  Nona, who turns ninety that summer, is now living on the island year round, with her granddaughter Charlotte.  The author very cleverly weaves Nona’s love story with her now dead husband Herb, with the expectations her children have for her grandchildren, as well as telling the love stories of each set of lovers.  As with many other family saga’s I have read, this family has its own dysfunctions that unfold in a very realistic natural way. This Chick Read: The Moment of Everything by Shelly King

Lately, I have been looking for books to read that are about small book stores, after reading  two fabulous books, The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry and The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend.  I had read about The Moment of Everything, previously, and thought that it looked interesting. Unemployed, Maggie Dupres spends all of her time in The Dragonfly’s Used Book store, dreaming of better days and reading bodice ripper, romance novels. This Chick Read: Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld

I will admit, that even though I was an English major, I have never read a Jane Austen book  (American Lit and creative writing minors!).  I have, however, watched the movie, Pride and Prejudice, a couple different versions even. I was familiar enough with the characters and references that I don’t think I missed a thing, with this modern retelling of that story.  I will say though, that even if you haven’t read, or watched(!) Pride and Prejudice, I think you will enjoy Curtis Sittenfelds quick wit, hilarious characterizations, and the ability to string words together in a way that feels a little formal while still is relevant to how we communicate today. This Chick Read: The Rejected Writers’ Book Club by Suzanne Kelman

The Rejected Writers’ Book Club was surprisingly charming and fantastically funny.  The cast of characters all seemed slightly crazy, even more so set against the perfect straight man (or woman) Janet Johnson, the librarian.  Somehow, Janet finds herself drawn into a caper by a group of older ladies, calling themselves The Rejected Writers’ Book Club.  Doris, the leader and Alpha of the club, had “gasp”, had her book accepted by a publishing house in San Francisco. This Chick Read: The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin

I read this book sitting on the couch, occasionally laughing out loud and getting strange looks from my husband, as well as grabbing a Kleenex and sniffling, trying to hide my tears.  I didn’t fool anyone, including myself.  I was totally into the characters and storyline, and wasn’t going to put this book down until I was done.  When I was, I looked up stating, Continue reading “This Chick Read: The Storied Life of A.
