Backtrack 17 is the second novel in the TaP Team series by L.j. Charles. It continues the story of Everly Gray, a touch sensitive psychic who has joined a spy team created by her husband Tynan Pierce. I first was introduced to Everly Gray in A Touch of Ice, where she was a Personal Coach, or life counselor (This Chick Read: A Touch of Ice the Everly Gray Adventures). To prepare for the jump in time for Everly Gray as I skipped seven books, I also read Element 63, the first book in the TaP Team series. I was in for quite a shock. Everly Gray was now a super spy… and partnered with a husband Tynan Pierce. We did meet Pierce in A Touch of Ice, even though he wasn’t her love interest in that story. I will admit, my head was reeling a bit from this character development! She did solve a mystery in A Touch of Ice, so I guess that gave her a taste of danger and she couldn’t give up that thrill! Go Everly, I do like a strong female lead character!
The following synopsis is taken directly from Amazon.com.
Let the countdown begin…
Vlad Koslov has a vendetta, and Tynan Pierce is his target. Pierce has sworn to protect two material witnesses—a routine job for his company, TaP Security, until Koslov accepts a contract with organized crime to assassinate the witnesses.
Seventeen years of history and hatred explode when Koslov discovers Pierce is the obstacle protecting his targets. The evil born deep in Koslov’s psyche pushes him to delay fulfilling the contract so he can achieve his vendetta by eliminating Pierce’s family and friends. One. By. One.
Everly Gray, Pierce’s wife and partner, isn’t about to allow Koslov to murder the people she holds dear, especially not her husband. Pierce and Everly stand together as the TaP Team. Their mission: to protect the innocent in the chaos of a perfect storm.
Everly still a touch sensitive, has expanded her skills to use that psychic touch to help her solve crimes. How she went from being a Personal Coach to a super spy, I guess I’d need to read the other seven novels in the Everly Gray series to find out. The sizzle I noticed in Ice between Everly and Pierce must have been acted on at some point because she isn’t with Mitchell who was her love interest (and husband) previously. Mitchell was alluded to in Element 63, and isn’t around anymore, but her connection with Pierce is fun, and they have a fierce need to protect each other, which is nice.
Backtrack 17’s plot had Everly and Pierce protecting their friends and each other from a past enemy of Pierce’s. This gave the reader a lot of opportunities to see how Everly’s psychic skills have advanced. She now also reads aura’s, using that knowledge to determine someone’s mood or seeing if they also have psychic abilities. I have always thought that would be a cool ability to have, and it was neat to see that used in a book! A few other characters were new to me, but I have a feeling were in some previous novels. I would have liked to have known their history with each other, so if you are new to the series, I would recommend starting with Ms. Charles first Everly Gray book, and continuing in order. I was left guessing on a few of the plot points and because of that may have missed some nuances to the story. Regardless of that, I did enjoy the story and Everly was a woman I could root for, and the romance sizzled.
