It’s Monday, what are you reading? (12/11/23)

December is the busiest time of the year at work which means time is pretty limited. However, there’s nothing like escaping into a good book to help you destress. I’ll admit that I’m not reading anything challenging and am choosing books that are easy to fall into and finish. Here’s what I’ve been reading.

I was lucky enough to get an Advanced Reader Copy of this book and gobbled it up as soon as it hit my kindle. Oh my god, Ali Hazelwood wrote something completely different than her other novels and it worked! Loved these characters and the world she built. I can’t wait for the audiobook to come out.

I’ve enjoyed Ashley Poston’s book and this series has been totally cute. The first two took place in a Comic con environment and the characters were actors in a sci-fi franchise. This novel follows another character from that sci-fi franchise but takes place in a small town. It’a little harder to get into but I’m not giving up on it yet.

Have a great Monday and happy reading!

This Chick Read: Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood

Mallory Greenleaf gave up chess four years ago but her best friend has asked her to take an open spot on her team in a charity tournament and guilted her into playing. As she knocks off one challenger after another she finds herself facing the #1 player in the world, the “kingkiller”, Nolan Sawyer… and wipes the board with him. Nolan’s loss to an unknown player shocks the world and Mallory is drawn back into the life she’d once left and cash prizes she can receive to help support her struggling family. Keeping it all a secret from her family is imperative but when Nolan shows up at her door imploring her for a game that secret is threatened.

I loved this first YA novel by Ali Hazelwood. I say YA, but really this reads as an adult novel with characters who face adult issues. They only thing that’s YA about it is the age of the characters who are in their late teens and early twenties. If you’re a fan of The Queen’s Gambit, as I was, this novel reminded me that I don’t know a bit about chess but the strategy, skill, and drama can be riveting despite my lack of knowledge. Mallory’s life was decimated by her parents tragic divorce – all tied to the game she loved, so she dropped it like a hot potato and was determined to put the past behind her and help her ill mother support the family. Fortunately, she was drawn back into the chess world and Nolan Sawyer took and interest in this young lady. Despite him being a good guy, there were classic moments of good vs. evil and our Mallory dueled it out on the chess board. What fun!

Nolan was a pretty typical Ali Hazelwood character, but had his own tragic past that kept him separated emotionally from his pretty solid group of friends. He was everything a hero should be, handsome and loyal, but he was also pretty secretive, which made for some great conflict and resolutions. He was very well matched in skill with Mallory and it was nice to see that he wasn’t threatened, but relished the challenge. I loved this healthy relationship that helped each of them deal with their troublesome pasts.

This novel, like I said above, is a young adult novel, and is in comparison to adult novels pretty clean. I would consider it a slow burn romance, but there is some sizzle towards the latter part of the book so if you’re looking for clean, this may not be a good fit. For me, it was the perfect mix of relationship building, conflict, drama, and heat. Check & Mate was the perfect play and one helluva a good story.

This Chicks Sunday Commentary: My Top 5 Most Anticipated Book Releases- Nov’23

You can definitely tell we are getting close to the holidays. There are some great titles being released in anticipation of the need to purchases some books as gifts. When checking out the lists there are several from my own TBR that may need to be transferred over to my husband “Presents for Deb” list. Here are my top 5.

I do love a good enemies to lovers trope and Alexa Martin has become a go-to author for a quick romance fix. This synopsis has me hooked!

Synopsis:

After years of hustling, Collins Carter has finally made it…back to her parents’ house. Between tending to the compost with her newly retired dad and running into her high school nemesis at the only decent coffee shop in town, Collins realizes this subdivision from hell she swore she’d never return to is her rock bottom.

Then the homeowner’s association complaint arrived.

Nathaniel Adams always dreamed of a nice, quiet life in his suburban hometown. Or at least that’s what he thought until Collins moved back and sent his quaint, organized life into a tailspin. He thought Collins was infuriating ten years ago, but when she announces she’s running against him for HOA president, all bets are off.

From secret board meetings to vicious smear campaigns whispered over backyard fences, Collins and Nate sink to levels their sleepy suburb has never seen before. But as hate turns into lust, these two enemies are forced to reckon with the feelings they’ve ignored for years. If only there were bylaws for real life.

Boy, don’t we all wish at times to skip our lives to the good part? That’s the premise behind this rom-com, but of course, our heroine starts wondering about all the bits she missed. Sophie Cousens always has a mystical element in her plots. I’m looking forward to reading this one!

Synopsis: Is living the life you’ve wished for really a dream come true?

Lucy Young is twenty-six and tired. Tired of fetching coffees for senior TV producers, sick of going on disastrous dates, and done with living in a damp flat with roommates who never buy toilet paper. After another disappointing date, Lucy stumbles upon a wishing machine. Pushing a coin into the slot, Lucy closes her eyes and wishes with all her might: Please, let me skip to the good part of my life.

When she wakes the next morning to a handsome man, a ring on her finger, a high-powered job, and two storybook-perfect children, Lucy can’t believe this is real—especially when she looks in the mirror, and staring back is her own fortysomething face. Has she really skipped ahead like she’s always wanted, or has she simply forgotten a huge chunk of her life? As Lucy begins to embrace new relationships and the perks of maturity, she’ll have to ask herself: Can she go back to her previous life, and if so, can she stand to leave the good part behind?

A little bit mystery, and I’m sure a big hint of romantic suspense. I love this style of Nora Roberts book and I can’t wait to get my hands on it and dig in!

Synopsis: 1806: Astrid Poole sits in her bridal clothes, overwhelmed with happiness. But before her marriage can be consummated, she is murdered, and the circle of gold torn from her finger. Her last words are a promise to Collin never to leave him…

Graphic designer Sonya MacTavish is stunned to learn that her late father had a twin he never knew about—and that her newly discovered uncle, Collin Poole, has left her almost everything he owned, including a majestic Victorian house on the Maine coast, which the will stipulates she must live in it for at least three years. Her engagement recently broken, she sets off to find out why the boys were separated at birth—and why it was all kept secret until a genealogy website brought it to light.

Trey, the young lawyer who greets her at the sprawling clifftop manor, notes Sonya’s unease—and acknowledges that yes, the place is haunted…but just a little. Sure enough, Sonya finds objects moved and music playing out of nowhere. She sees a painting by her father inexplicably hanging in her deceased uncle’s office, and a portrait of a woman named Astrid, whom the lawyer refers to as “the first lost bride.” It’s becoming clear that Sonya has inherited far more than a house. She has inherited a centuries-old curse, and a puzzle to be solved if there is any hope of breaking it…

I was fortunate to get an advanced reader copy of this novel. Guys, it is soo good! I never knew I’d like the subject of chess so much. Of course, there’s a bit of romance involved too…

Synopsis: Mallory Greenleaf is done with chess. Every move counts nowadays; after the sport led to the destruction of her family four years earlier, Mallory’s focus is on her mom, her sisters, and the dead-end job that keeps the lights on. That is, until she begrudgingly agrees to play in one last charity tournament and inadvertently wipes the board with notorious “Kingkiller” Nolan Sawyer: current world champion and reigning Bad Boy of chess.

Nolan’s loss to an unknown rook-ie shocks everyone. What’s even more confusing? His desire to cross pawns again. What kind of gambit is Nolan playing? The smart move would be to walk away. Resign. Game over. But Mallory’s victory opens the door to sorely needed cash-prizes and despite everything, she can’t help feeling drawn to the enigmatic strategist….

As she rockets up the ranks, Mallory struggles to keep her family safely separated from the game that wrecked it in the first place. And as her love for the sport she so desperately wanted to hate begins to rekindle, Mallory quickly realizes that the games aren’t only on the board, the spotlight is brighter than she imagined, and the competition can be fierce (-ly attractive. And intelligent…and infuriating…)

The first novel in this series, Fourth Wing, was non-stop and so much fun. Plus there are dragons! Can’t wait for this sequel to hit my kindle next month.

Synopsis: Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.

Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.

But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.

Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College—and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.

It’s Monday, what are you reading? (10/9/23)

I feel like I’m finally getting back into my reading schedule and have listened to and have been reading some good books in the last week or so. Here’s what I’ve been up to.

I took the day off on Thursday and plugged in my ear buds and listened to this book in its entirety. It was so good! I think I connected with it particularly because I’ve had a few knocks and the subject just resonated. I really appreciated the message of hope and resilience.

Always a fan of Ali Hazelwood, I believe this is her first foray into the young adult genre. I’m about to crack it open and can’t wait to dive into some interesting characters.

I hope you’ve all been rocking your reading lists! Happy Monday and happy reading.

This Chick Read: The Princess and the Fangirl (Once Upon a Con #2) by Ashley Poston

I read Geekerella, the first in the series, back when it came out in 2018 and whereas I didn’t love it, love it, I did think it was a good read. I’m not really sure why I never read the next two books but after getting into this author’s adult fiction I’m going back and checking out this YA series and I must say, this book hit the spot.

Imogen Lovelace is a fangirl for the character Amara on Starfield a sci-fi tv show a la Star Trek. Amara got killed off and Imogen has created a hashtag that’s gone viral #saveamara and she’s at the ExcelsiCon to hand out buttons and do her thing to try to save a fan favorite. Jessica Stone is the actress who plays Amara and admittedly hates her character. She’s contracted to make the rounds at the Comic Con and is hopeful that her character really did die and won’t be back for a second season. When these two meet the interaction isn’t friendly and when Imogen gets mistaken for Jess and lands on a panel as her she takes the opportunity to speak up for saving her character. Needless to say Jess isn’t happy. Until she needs Imogen to be her again.

I really enjoyed the trip down memory lane into the weird world that are Comic Con’s. I used to help out at them when I was younger and you really do see all sorts of “characters” and they are really a lot of fun. The thought that one person could be mistaken for a movie star is a bit of a stretch but this plot was a fun bit of fantasy so I didn’t bother with breaks from reality. What made this novel work was that these two characters personalities were complete opposites that ended up sharing the same view by the end of the book. I love those converging storylines, the journey is very satisfying!

Jessica and Imogen don’t really have a lot to do with each other in this novel other than replace each other a la Parent Trap, but they each get a love interest that is related to their counterpart. In Imogen’s plot it’s Jess’s assistant/best friend and in Jess’s it’s Imogen’s virtual female friend who has never set eyes on Imogen before so can believe the swap scheme. I enjoyed the latter story better than the former but I thought the parallel storylines were a nice departure from the usual YA romance plots. Jessica seemed a little bit more mature than Imogen and her romance read more mature to me and I liked that aspect, plus making this tv star gay made her more interesting and in comparison the boy meets girl romance fell a little flat. Despite that, I really enjoyed reading this novel and loved the sci-fi aspects to the plot. I think I’ll gear up for book #3! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

This Chicks Sunday Commentary: My Top 5 Most Anticipated Book Releases- Oct’23

Usually I start this post talking about the hard task of digging through all of the choices to figure out my top 5 book releases for the month. I’ll admit, I had the opposite problem this time. I dug through the lists and had trouble finding five I wanted to read. I’ll admit, I’m in a bit of a slump and finding it hard to get into a book at the moment. Life has just been so busy! BUT here are the one’s I did find that I will be adding to my TBR.

A sequel to the novel that started it all for John Grisham- The Firm. I read the firm back when it came out. I haven’t read too many of John Grisham’s more recent novels but I’m curious to see where he is leading the iconic main character.

Synopsis: What became of Mitch and Abby McDeere after they exposed the crimes of Memphis law firm Bendini, Lambert & Locke and fled the country? The answer is in The Exchange, the riveting sequel to The Firm, the blockbuster thriller that launched the career of America’s favorite storyteller. It is now fifteen years later, and Mitch and Abby are living in Manhattan, where Mitch is a partner at the largest law firm in the world. When a mentor in Rome asks him for a favor that will take him far from home, Mitch finds himself at the center of a sinister plot that has worldwide implications—and once again endangers his colleagues, friends, and family. Mitch has become a master at staying one step ahead of his adversaries, but this time there’s nowhere to hide.

Can you really go wrong with the magic that is usually contained between the pages of a Josie Silver book? I think not!

Synopsis: A young chef stumbles on a secret family recipe that might lead her to the love—and life—she’s been looking for in this stunning novel from the New York Times bestselling author of One Day in December.

When Iris decides to move to New York to restart her life, she realizes she underestimated how big the Big Apple really is—all the nostalgic movies set in New York she’d watched with her mom while eating their special secret-recipe gelato didn’t quite do it justice.

But Bobby, Iris’s best friend, isn’t about to let her hide away. He drags her to a famous autumn street fair in Little Italy, and as they walk through the food stalls, a little family-run gelateria catches her eye—could it be the same shop that’s in an old photo of her mother’s?

Curious, Iris returns the next day and meets the handsome Gio, who tells her that the shop is in danger of closing. His uncle, sole keeper of their family’s gelato recipe, is in a coma, so they can’t make more. When Iris samples the last remaining batch, she realizes that their gelato and her gelato are one and the same. But how can she tell them she knows their secret recipe when she’s not sure why Gio’s uncle gave it to her mother in the first place?

Iris offers her services as a chef to help them re-create the flavor and finds herself falling for Gio and his family. But when Gio’s uncle finally wakes up, all of the secrets Iris has been keeping threaten to ruin the new life—and new love—she’s been building all winter long.

I love a great friendship novel and this book looks to be the best kind of friendship- friends to lovers. I’ve got my fingers crossed Imogen becomes this man’s first choice!

Synopsis:mogen Finch has just been through her seventeenth breakup. She saw it coming, so she’s not as crushed as she might be, but with all seventeen of her exes leaving her for other partners, she’s come to believe a prediction her well-intentioned and possibly clairvoyant mother made over twenty years ago: that Imogen would never come first at anything or to anyone. Is her love life failing due to a magical curse? Insufficient effort? Poor timing or personality mismatches? Everyone has opinions on the matter.

Imogen’s ready to give up altogether. But when Eliot Swift, her secret high school crush, returns to their small coastal town after a decade of nomadic travels, Imogen has new motivation to try again. Eliot’s full of encouragement. He suggests that her curse is not only imagined, it’s easily breakable. All they need is one win–any win–and she can believe in love, and in herself again.

From trivia games to swimming races to corn-shucking contests, the pair sets out to snag Imogen her first first. But when victory proves more elusive than Eliot anticipated, and when his deep-seeded wanderlust compels him to depart for far away places, Imogen fears she’s destined to remain in second place forever. Fortunately for them both, sometimes magic lingers in the most unexpected places. And love is far from predictable.

I live in music city and have a soft spot for rock star (country star?) romances. Erin Hahn has written some great YA novels and I’m looking forward to this foray into adult romances.

Synopsis: Lorelai Jones had it all: a thriving country music career and a superstar fiancé. Then she played one teenie tiny protest song at a concert and ruined her entire future, including her impending celebrity marriage. But five years later, she refuses to be done with her dreams and calls up the one person who stuck by her, her dear friend and her former fiancé’s co-writer and bandmate, Craig.

Craig Boseman’s held a torch for Lorelai for years, but even he knows the backup bass player never gets the girl. Things are different now, though. Craig owns his own indie record label and his songwriting career is taking off. If he can confront his past and embrace his gifts, he might just be able to help Lorelai earn the comeback she deserves—and maybe win her heart in the process.

But when the two reunite to rebuild her career and finally scratch that itch that’s been building between them for years, Lorelai realizes a lot about what friends don’t do. For one, friends don’t have scratch-that-itch sex. They also don’t almost-kiss on street corners, publish secret erotic poetry about each other, have counter-top sex, write songs for each other, have no-strings motorcycle sex, or go on dates. And they sure as heck don’t fall in love… right?

Real people with real problems who fall in love. The first novel in this series was great and I can’t wait to dig into this one!

Synopsis:

Katerina Wilmot and Christopher Petruchio shared backyards as kids, but as adults they won’t even share the same hemisphere. That is, until Kate makes a rare visit home, and their fiery animosity rekindles into a raging inferno.

Despite their friends’ and families’ pleas for peace, Christopher is unconvinced Kate would willingly douse the flames of their enmity. But when a drunken Kate confesses she’s only been hostile because she thought he hated her, Christopher vows to make peace with Kate once and for all. Tempting as it is to be swept away by her nemesis-turned-gentleman, Kate isn’t sure she can trust his charming good-guy act.

When Christopher’s persistence and Kate’s curiosity lead to an impassioned kiss, they realize “peace” is the last thing that will ever be possible between them. As desire gives way to deeper feelings, Kate and Christopher must decide if it’s truly better to hate than to never risk their hearts—or if they already gave them away long ago.

It’s Monday, what are you reading? (9/11/23)

I’ve spent the last two weeks moving so I really haven’t read too many books, but I did finish one book by Ashley Poston that was cute, and started a new one last night. I miss my reading time! Here is what is on my virtual nightstand!

I’ve enjoyed this author’s recent adult contemporary novels and wanted to finish out this young adult series I’d started a few years ago. The Princess and the Fangirl was a cute re-telling of The Prince and the Pauper, although I certainly wouldn’t have gotten that reference if I hadn’t read it in the synopsis. It was a fun story and I really enjoyed the comic con setting and interesting characters!

Very easy to get into and as entertaining as Meghan Quinn’s novels usually are. This was the perfect book for me to pick up and escape into!

Have a great Monday and happy reading!

This Chick Read: The Prince & The Apocalypse by Kara McDowell

Wren Wheeler has anticipated her school trip abroad for years but when it finally happens she finds the experience wasn’t what she dreamed of at all. Sick with the flu, a fight with her best friend, and missing her family all contributed to her just wanting to be at home. On her last day in London she decides to grab a quick breakfast at a restaurant her sister recommended and finds herself saving the crown prince from the paparazzi making her miss her flight back home. When news gets out about a meteor strike heading towards the Atlantic, flights ground to a halt and the only person she has to turn to is the crown prince himself.

This novel was a fun bit of fantasy! Wren is not impressed by Prince Theo’s star status at all which makes for some fun dialog, and there’s nothing like an end of the world scenario to bring two people together that would never normally hang out. As they travel across Europe to Greece where a private plane can whisk Wren back home these two grow closer. Is it circumstance or are they really drawn to each other’s personalities? That’s a question the second book can and I hope will answer.

If you like young adult novels that aren’t realistic but are fun to read then The Prince & The Apocalypse may be the right novel for you! I certainly enjoyed this fun flight of fantasy remembering my own young dreams of meeting my own prince. It’s only in a book where that man could be the Crown Prince of England! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review and it was honest!

This Chick Read: Stars and Smoke by Marie Lu

International Popstar Winter Young is at the top of the charts and one of the most watched stars in the world. He should be flying high but his insecurities and some trauma from his past has him looking for something more. Enter Sydney Cossette, a member of a secret government agency, who is assigned to be one of Winter’s bodyguards when he performs for a European oligarch’s daughters birthday party. Winter’s on stage persona makes him the perfect foil to gather top secret info and stop an illegal arms deal from going through. Of course, not everything goes as planned.

Marie Lu’s novels are written for one purpose, to entertain her readers. Stars and Smoke delivers on this promise! Winter Young is a very interesting character,he’s the youngest son of a mother who never paid him much attention, favoring his older brother who reminds her of happier times. When that brother dies, Winter is left feeling like she wishes it had been him instead, so when he’s approached by the agency he has a couple of reasons to help them, but he never figures that he would be good at what they’ve asked him to do.

Sydney was kind of a wildcard character. She lived to succeed at her job and didn’t think much of this superstar with whom she was paired. She quickly finds out that he is not the person who he portrays on stage and has some serious skills that translate well into his new career as a spy. I loved how these two characters interacted and the chemistry they had as partners and possibly something more.

Stars and Smoke was a very fast paced story that was a movie in my mind. I could very easily visualize everything I was reading on the page and easily connected with the main characters. It was fun to read, which is one of the best compliments I can give to a book.

It’s Monday, what are you reading? (7/3/23)

If you’re living in the US, Happy 4th of July weekend! We are, of course, celebrating our nation’s independence, but do you know what else I’m celebrating? A day of reading! OK, I may do a few other things but I’m definitely going to crack open a book and read a chapter or fifteen. In fact, I started a fun book this weekend. Here’s what’s on my radar.

JUST FINISHED

This was a bit of light reading, and a totally fun young adult end of the world romance. I picked this title randomly and found a new young adult author to read. Love doing that!

JUST STARTED

This author had me at the soccer ball on the cover. I’m a sucker for a soccer themed romance and I knew this author would deliver. I’m reading this one now and it’s cute and angsty. Just what I was in the mood for when I picked it up.

How are you spending your holiday?

Have a great Monday and happy reading!
