This Chick Read: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Feyre, hunting in the forest to feed her starving family, comes upon a wolf who is about to capture the deer her family desperately needs to survive, and kills it.  The wolf is a faerie in disguise, and his death breaks a treaty between faery and humans.  Feyre has to go live in Prythian in order to honor the treaty that she did not know she had broken.  Tamlin, the lord who brings her to his magical land lets her live in his castle, where she learns that all is not as it appears.  He and his people are under a curse, part of which requires them to  wear masks that they can never take off, and which they can not speak of to her.  Feyre, curious about the curse, the land and Tamlin, ends up investigating the limits to this curse. This Chick Read: MILA 2.0 by Debra Driza

I started reading this book expecting a normal young adult, teen romance novel.  I was in for a surprise when a third of the way through, I found myself reading a science fiction novel.  Yes, it is directed towards teens, as Mila is a teenager in high school, but as I found out she is NOT a normal teenager.  This teenager doesn’t bleed red, she bleeds a milky white fluid and finds that her insides are bionic. Bionic is my term, but  I am of the generation that watched Jamie Summers the bionic woman save lives on her tv show, so when I read the description of her injury, what was found under her skin, and how her mother “fixed” her injury, that was the visual I jumped to in my head- bionic.  Those of you under forty aren’t going to understand what I’m talking about unless you love retro TV,  so to be a little more clear, Mila discovers that she is not a real girl. This Chick Read: Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

Lady Midnight is the first novel in the Dark Artifices series, which follows Emma Carstairs and her parabatai Julian Blackthorn of the LA Institute.  We were introduced to the Blackthorns, and Emma in the City of Heavenly Fire.  As children, they watched their parents fall to Sebastian’s evil machinations, leaving Julian, at twelve years old, to raise his four younger siblings.  Even though Julian and Emma are only 17 in this book, it feels much more adult because they were forced to be parents to his brothers and sisters. This Chick Read: My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows

My Lady Jane tells a fictional tale of Lady Jane Grey, in history crowned Queen of England for little more than a week, before being beheaded.  These three authors tell a rather different story, using some historical facts such as being crowned Queen, but then veering into fantasy to rewrite Janes’s future, or rather her past, into a happy ending.  This young adult novel was a refreshing change from other fantasy-adventure tales in the genre.  The dialog is filled with satire and humor, some of which is very modern, and told with a sly wink. This Chick Read: Invaded (Alienated #2) by Melissa Landers

The story of Cara and Aelyx continues, but they are living on different planets.  Cara is living on L’heir, as a foreign exchange student, and Aelyx is on Earth on a PR campaign, helping the L’Heir and human relations improve after the exchange student debacle that he helped implode in the first book.  Each of them are challenged by living with a race that continues to hate them.  This novel is not as much of a romance, as they are each living a world apart, so the reader follows both of their stories individually, rooting for them to overcome the hate, and loving it when they are able to convert others to enjoy diversity, at the risk of their own lives. This Chick Read: Alienated by Melissa Landers

Cara, an honor student in her high school, was chosen as one of the first alien exchange students with L’eihr. They look human, but are a genetically engineered race, cloned to weed out imperfections, like greed, hate, humor and love.  Before she goes to their planet, a L’eihr exchange student, a boy named Aelyx, is sent to Earth to live with her family and join her in her classes at school.  At first, Cara is not thrilled with this idea, but after Aelyx’s arrival, Continue reading “This Chick Read: Alienated by Melissa Landers”

This Chick Read: A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn

We are introduced to Veronica Speedwell, in this first novel in this series.  Veronica is an abnormality for her time, she is a scientist, earning a living collecting butterflies.  Traveling the world, by herself, a single woman and adventurer.  She is unmarried, and enjoys taking lovers, although she has a rule that they must not be Englishmen.  In 1887, these things make her very unusual, and as this story unfolds, the mystery of Veronica Speedwell and her unusual-ness (is that a word?) gets even more strange… In a good way! This Chick Read: Darken the Stars (The Kricket Series book 3) by Amy A. Bartol

Darken the Stars is the third and final book in this series, and I, like all of the other fans of this series are left saying “What?”  I loved how Kricket, who had been terrified of Kyon in the previous books, see’s his faults, but comes to care for him anyway.  Ok, if you’ve read my previous reviews for Under Different Stars and Sea of Stars, you know that Kyon has been cast as the evil character.  But, as with all great storytellers, this author gave us some insight into why he was so crazy, and also why Kricket was so important to him. This Chick Read: Sea of Stars (The Kricket Series book 2) by Amy A. Bartol

The majority of Sea of Stars finds Kricket running with Trey Allairis, away from everyone who wants to control her, and through her, her powers of being able to see and change the future.  With the exception of Trey’s two Cavar brothers, Jax and Wayra, she does not trust anyone else on Ethar.  From what we have seen of the other men on Ethar, and how the men from this planet treat women, I don’t blame her. This Chick Read: Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton

This YA book took me completely by surprise.  I try not to read other reviews if I think I’m going to review a book myself, but I had read the synopsis.  It sounded intriguing, but didn’t sound special, yep, insert foot here.  I’ll get back to this statement, I promise, BUT, Rebel of the Sands did have some similarities to other YA novels.
