Harper Ward is summoned to the Sheriff’s office in order to use her tracking skills to help investigate two murders with similar deaths. Their only suspect is a man who appears to be a savage, living off the grid in the wilderness. His appearance is unkempt, but she sees intelligence and kindness in his eyes. As the investigation advances, Lucas is kept at the center, but is he really the wild man he appears to be? A cold blooded killer? Or is he a victim. Harper needs to find these answers because the more time she spends with him, the harder it is to guard her heart.

This novel captured my interest a few pages in and I absolutely could not put it down. Harper’s character had an incredible back story that was delicately woven into this story. Her every move and desire made absolute sense and her interest in Lucas, a man whose appearance is frightening but whose demeanor is gentle, especially with her, made their interactions riveting. These were two characters that I wanted to read and know more about. As the plot unfolded and their secrets were unveiled Harper and Lucas became more interesting instead of less.

Flashbacks typically drive me crazy, but Mia Sheridan used them to advantage, moving the plot forward incrementally through these stories. These episodes were heart-wrenching and sometimes difficult to read but provided the reader with even more of a reason to root for these characters. As the more romantic elements unfolded these flashbacks provided a reason for being in the wilderness and I was rooting for this boy and had hope for his future and him finding a home and happiness.

This novel had it all. A great mystery, strong male and female lead, a warm hearted romance, and a redemption arc at the end. It looks to be the first in a series and I’m looking forward to the journey this author is going to take the reader on in these future novels. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
