It’s Monday, what are you reading? (8/28/23)

It’s my birthday! Woot Woot! Needless to say, between that and moving this week it’s been a bit busy and I’m reading comfort books. Sometimes you just have to pick up something you know you like and do a re-read, right? Here’s what’s on my virtual shelf.

A bit like When Harry Met Sally, You, Again follows Ari and Josh through about 10 years. It’s not until they meet again just when they need each other the most that they strike up that friendship that turns into something more. I liked this one a lot. It made me think!

The second book in this series just came out and reminded me how much I love this author. So I picked up this book for the fourth time for a re-read. If you’re a fan of the Great British Baking Championship you’ll love these characters!

It’s going to be another busy week but I hope to find more time to read.

Happy Monday and happy reading!

This Chicks Sunday Commentary: My Top 5 Book Releases- Sept’23

While perusing the book lists regarding September releases, I’m noticing a LOT of romance titles that will be going on my TBR. Too many to grab as they release but not too many to get to over the next few months… ok a year. Are any of these on your radar?

OK, I was at the hairdresser last week and had a conversation with the girl who was washing my hair. She’s a HUGE fan of hockey romances. I love sports romances but I always want more story. So the timing was totally right for me to see this title on the September book releases, by an author I have never heard of, but it looks pretty cute! I couldn’t find it on any retail sites but it’s supposed to go on sale on 9/7. I will be looking for it!

Synopsis: She’s my lifeline, my rock…
When I was billeted with the Bukowskis, I made a mistake.
I didn’t lock Gracie Agnieska Bukowski down.
Instead, like a 16-year-old idiot, I became best friends with her brother, Kow, and now, the family considers me one of their own.
Until her, hockey was my only refuge. So, when I’m traded to the New York Stars, my first move is to change my number to 35. See, we made a vow, one that she might have forgotten, but I haven’t.
Gracie’s about to be swept off her feet.
I’m going to prove to her that not only is she not my sister…
She’s my end game.

Despite not having read the last novel in this series ( Making the Match: I have a hard time with redemption novels when a man cheats on his woman despite this being a romance with a different woman.) I am really looking forward to this book! Hale has always been a really interesting side character and the author has not shown us too much about him so he’s a bit of a mystery. This should be a fun read!

Synopsis:

Hale Wheeler inherited billions from his father. He’s decided to take those resources and change the world for the better. He’s married to his mission, so he doesn’t have time for love.

There’s more lurking behind this decision. He hasn’t faced the tragic loss of his father, or the bitterness of his parents’ divorce. He doesn’t intend to follow in his father’s footsteps, breaking a woman’s heart in a way it will never mend. So he vows he’ll never marry.

But Hale is intrigued when he meets Elsa Cohen, the ambitious celebrity news journalist who has been reporting on his famous family. He warns her off, but she makes him a deal. She’ll pull back in exchange for an exclusive interview.

Elsa Cohen is married to her career, but she wants love, marriage, children. She also wants the impossibly handsome, fiercely loyal, tenderhearted Hale Wheeler.

They go head-to-head, both denying why there are fireworks every time they meet. But once they understand their undeniable attraction, Elsa can’t help but fall for the dynamic do-gooder.

As for Hale, he knows he needs to fight the pull of the beautiful, bold, loving Elsa Cohen, because breaking her would crush him.

I have really come to like this author’s writing and enjoyed her odd character matching in Two Wrongs Make a Right, the first novel in this series. Knowing you have a sure thing (good read) in your back pocket makes this an easy choice and one I’m looking forward to reading.

Synopsis:

Katerina Wilmot and Christopher Petruchio shared backyards as kids, but as adults they won’t even share the same hemisphere. That is, until Kate makes a rare visit home, and their fiery animosity rekindles into a raging inferno.

Despite their friends’ and families’ pleas for peace, Christopher is unconvinced Kate would willingly douse the flames of their enmity. But when a drunken Kate confesses she’s only been hostile because she thought he hated her, Christopher vows to make peace with Kate once and for all. Tempting as it is to be swept away by her nemesis-turned-gentleman, Kate isn’t sure she can trust his charming good-guy act.

When Christopher’s persistence and Kate’s curiosity lead to an impassioned kiss, they realize “peace” is the last thing that will ever be possible between them. As desire gives way to deeper feelings, Kate and Christopher must decide if it’s truly better to hate than to never risk their hearts—or if they already gave them away long ago.

This book was been #1 on all of the lists I’ve seen, and I swear I’m not being contrary, but I think this series is pretty good, but not knock it out of the park good. However, I’m eager for everyone to prove me wrong! This is the third book in the Knockemount series. I know it will be cute, but will I be wowed? Lucian is the one character who absolutely sizzled on the page, so….

Synopsis:

Lucian Rollins is a lean, mean vengeance-seeking mogul. On a quest to erase his father’s mark on the family name, he spends every waking minute pulling strings and building an indestructible empire. The more money and power he amasses, the safer he is from threats.

Except when it comes to the feisty small-town librarian that keeps him up at night…

Sloane Walton is a spitfire determined to carry on her father’s quest for justice. She’ll do that just as soon as she figures out exactly what the man she hates did to—or for—her family. Bonded by an old, dark secret from the past and the dislike they now share for each other, Sloane trusts Lucian about as far as she can throw his designer-suited body.

When bickering accidentally turns to foreplay, these two find themselves not quite regretting their steamy one-night stand. Once those flames are fanned, it seems impossible to put them out again. But with Sloane ready to start a family and Lucian refusing to even consider the idea of marriage and kids, these enemies-to-lovers are stuck at an impasse.

Broken men break women. It’s what Lucian believes, what he’s witnessed, and he’s not going to take that chance with Sloane. He’d rather live a life of solitude than put her in danger. But he learns the hard way that leaving her means leaving her unprotected from other threats.

It’s the second time he’s ruthlessly cut her out of his life. There’s no way she’s going to give him a third chance. He’s just going to have to make one for himself.

Fish out of water, grumpy hero, sports-like romance. Three of my favorite tropes all in one book! How can you not look forwarding to reading this novel? Can Elena Armas duplicate her success with her debut novel The Spanish Love Deception? You can only give this one a try and find out.

Synopsis:

Adalyn Reyes has spent years perfecting her daily routine: wake up at dawn, drive to the Miami Flames FC offices, try her hardest to leave a mark, go home, and repeat.

But her routine is disrupted when a video of her in an altercation with the team’s mascot goes viral. Rather than fire her, the team’s owner—who happens to be her father—sends Adalyn to middle-of-nowhere North Carolina, where she’s tasked with turning around the struggling local soccer team, the Green Warriors, as a way to redeem herself. Her plans crumble upon discovering that the players wear tutus to practice (impractical), keep pet goats (messy), and are terrified of Adalyn (counterproductive), and are nine-year-old kids.

To make things worse, also in town is Cameron Caldani, goalkeeping prodigy whose presence is somewhat of a mystery. Cam is the perfect candidate to help Adalyn, but after one very unfortunate first encounter involving a rooster, Cam’s leg, and Adalyn’s bumper, he’s also set on running her out of town. But banishment is not an option for Adalyn. Not again. Helping this ragtag children’s team is her road to redemption, and she is playing the long game. With or without Cam’s help.

Whelp! These are my top 5 book releases for September. Here’s my disclaimer- I know that my top 5 are not for everyone and that you may be looking forward to completely different titles or genre’s. That’s ok! Anyone who buys, checks out, borrows, and reads a novel is a winner in my book. 🙂

Have fun reading.

It’s Monday, what are you reading? (8/14/23)

Busy weekends and busy work weeks has really been cutting into this woman’s reading time! My husband and I have bought a house and we close at the end of the month, so most of my time has been spent organizing and packing. I’ve only been reading at the end of the day and only for about a half hour. I’ve been pooped! Despite that, I am currently listening to a good novel and just finished an old favorite. Here’s what’s on my shelf, virtual or otherwise.

When I’m stressed I always pick up an oldie but goodie because it helps me relax. I know what I’m getting and there’s something soothing in that re-read. At Peace is an old school Kristen Ashley and one of my favorites of hers. Violet and Cal’s story is a romantic thriller and has moments of sass, gooey emotion, and true love. Always a five star read for me.

Sometimes it’s hard to listen to an intricate world-building new novel, but I am not having that problem with House of Earth and Blood at all. What a fascinating world! I am so enjoying listening to this fantasy novel.

Have a great Monday and happy reading!

It’s Monday, what are you reading? (8/7/23)

What a spooky, eerie, kind of gory thriller. I loved the characters, but I’ll admit that I thought the plot was drawn out a little too long. I don’t read a lot of mysteries, so that might be party of it, but I think this author could’ve wrapped up sooner.

A debut novel by this author, My Roommate is a Vampire is fun but also seems to take this subject matter seriously. hink 18th century vampire meets 20th century heroine. I’m just getting into it and I’m interested to see how this plot resolves.

Have a great Monday and happy reading!

JUST FINISHED

My first novel by Sara Desai and I had so much fun with it! It was silly, irreverent, charming, and emotional. Everything you could ask for a weekend read. This book comes out tomorrow!

JUST STARTED

Book #3 in the Grey Gates series by Vanessa Nelson. I am loving this fantasy series. Party investigative, part magic – it’s everything I’d hoped for!

It’s Monday, what are you reading? (7/10/23)

Summertime, when the reading is easy… I love summer and hot weekends and staying inside with a good book. This weekend I enjoyed a graphic audiobook and realized, yes, their tagline “a movie in your mind” is totally appropriate! I also started a new book that got off to a wild start and I can’t wait to keep reading. Life is good!

JUST FINISHED

If you haven’t tried a graphic audiobook then you are missing out! Magic Bites is the first novel in one of my favorite series and I’ve got to admit, it’s probably my least favorite in the series as well. However, listening to it backed by music, sound effects for the fight scenes, and a different actor for every character is truly an experience and made me like this book more than ever!

JUST STARTED

This one is off to a quick start and I’m curious to see where it leads. I’ve heard many great things about this author but this is my first time reading her. So far, so good!

It’s Monday, what are you reading? (7/3/23)

If you’re living in the US, Happy 4th of July weekend! We are, of course, celebrating our nation’s independence, but do you know what else I’m celebrating? A day of reading! OK, I may do a few other things but I’m definitely going to crack open a book and read a chapter or fifteen. In fact, I started a fun book this weekend. Here’s what’s on my radar.

JUST FINISHED

This was a bit of light reading, and a totally fun young adult end of the world romance. I picked this title randomly and found a new young adult author to read. Love doing that!

JUST STARTED

This author had me at the soccer ball on the cover. I’m a sucker for a soccer themed romance and I knew this author would deliver. I’m reading this one now and it’s cute and angsty. Just what I was in the mood for when I picked it up.

How are you spending your holiday?

Have a great Monday and happy reading!

#4 BOOK RELEASE

This one was not on my radar at all, but it looks like it could be a cute rom-com with an older pair of protagonists. I’m definitely intrigued!

Synopsis:

Maggie is an unapologetically grumpy forty-eight-year-old hermit. But when her college-aged son makes her a deal—he’ll be more social if she does the same—she can’t refuse. She joins a new online gaming guild led by a friendly healer named Otter. So that nobody gets the wrong idea, she calls herself Bogwitch.

Otter is Aiden, a fifty-year-old optimist using the guild as an emotional outlet from his family drama caring for his aging mother while his brother plays house with Aiden’s ex-fiancée.

Bogwitch and Otter become fast virtual friends, but there’s a catch. Bogwitch thinks Otter is a college student. Otter assumes Bogwitch is an octogenarian.

When they finally meet face to face—after a rocky, shocking start—the unlikely pair of sunshine and stormy personalities grow tentatively closer. But Maggie’s previous relationships have left her bitter, and Aiden’s got a complicated past of his own.

#3 BOOK RELEASE

I’ll admit, I’ve already read this novel and it’s so cute! I love the setting of Bard’s Rest and can’t wait for the third book in the series.

Synopsis:

Portia Barnes is the youngest managing partner in her law firm’s history, and she and her stilettos are poised to step into the role of her dreams—leading the firm’s new Boston office. But first she’s taking a summer sabbatical in her hometown of Bard’s Rest, New Hampshire, where she discovers something’s rotten in the midst of the town’s annual Shakespeare festival.

Hotshot commercial developer Benjamin Dane is sniffing around Bard’s, and while Portia isn’t necessarily a Shakespeare fanatic like the rest of her family, she’s not about to let him bulldoze the town’s beloved outdoor theater. Yet to Portia’s dismay, Ben proves as skilled as she is when it comes to outworking, outmaneuvering, and one-upping the competition. While she’s never hesitated to wage war against hyper-successful alpha males, Portia is caught off guard by Ben’s openness and lack of arrogance. As her own long-constructed walls start to come down, Portia begins to wonder if he might be more than an archnemesis.

With her heart on the line and the future of the town hanging in the balance, Portia faces an impossible decision—Ben or Bard’s?—unless she finds a way to broker the merger of her life, and ensures the curtain falls on a happy ending for everyone.

#2 BOOK RELEASE

You can’t go wrong with a book by Katherine Center. Her book sometimes make me laugh and sometimes make me cry, but I know I’m going to connect with the characters and be completely entertained.

Synopsis: Love isn’t blind, it’s just a little blurry.

Sadie Montgomery never saw what was coming . . . Literally! One minute she’s celebrating the biggest achievement of her life―placing as a finalist in the North American Portrait Society competition―the next, she’s lying in a hospital bed diagnosed with a “probably temporary” condition known as face blindness. She can see, but every face she looks at is now a jumbled puzzle of disconnected features. Imagine trying to read a book upside down and in another language. This is Sadie’s new reality with every face she sees.

But, as she struggles to cope, hang on to her artistic dream, work through major family issues, and take care of her beloved dog, Peanut, she falls into―love? Lust? A temporary obsession to distract from the real problems in her life?―with not one man but two very different ones. The timing couldn’t be worse.

If only her life were a little more in focus, Sadie might be able to find her way. But perceiving anything clearly right now seems impossible. Even though there are things we can only find when we aren’t looking. And there are people who show up when we least expect them. And there are always, always other ways of seeing.

MY MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK FOR JULY 2023

I love, love, love Jane Porter’s novels. The characters are close to my own age and the story always hits that emotional button. I can’t wait to read Flirting with Fire, I just know I’m going to love it.

Synopsis: Love isn’t just an act in this captivating and flirty romance by New York Times bestselling author Jane Porter.

Forty-nine-year-old Margot Hughes has lived and breathed theater for the past twenty-five years. After a devastating breakup with her playwright fiancé, she wants nothing to do with the industry. She has sworn off New York, theater, actors—all of it. She returns to her hometown on California’s central coast and takes a job in real estate, where she manages significant investment properties. But Margot’s suddenly thrown back into the theater world when Sally, her friend and boss, who had been restoring and funding Cambria’s historic theater, has a heart attack. Before she knows it, Margot is tapped to take over the troubled summer production of Barefoot in the Park.

But the play is no walk in the park—the leads and director have all quit, and Margot struggles to find new actors…until Max Russo arrives. Forty-five-year-old Max is a former soap opera star turned rugged cowboy on TV’s most popular western series.  Max has a huge following and is the perfect hero to step up and save the play, provided Margot stars opposite him.   Although adamant she would never return to theater, Margot enjoys the long hours of rehearsal with a professional like Max, who is charming, witty, and passionate. But when the curtains close, can Margot allow herself to fall for Max when he represents everything she left behind?

It’s Monday, what are you reading? (6/26/23)

Sorry for my absence, but I’ve taken a few weeks off from some of my weekly posts. I have not, however, stopped reading! I can’t imagine what it would take for me to not crack a book open, seriously. With a couple of weeks on vacation, here’s what is now on my nightstand.

JUST FINISHED

I had recently read Kate Clayborn’s ‘Georgie All Along’ and realized there were quite a few novels she’d written that I hadn’t read. I wanted to get caught up and this was the first in the lot that I’ve managed to read. Loved it! Cute premise and very realistic response to winning the lottery. I liked these characters a lot and found myself not wanting to put this book down.

JUST STARTED

I started this series when I was on vacation and have gotten hooked! The audiobook is narrated by Christie Moreau and does a great job with all of the accents and male/female voices. This series is totally fun and absolutely unbelievable, but who needs a believable plot in order to be entertained?

I’d love to hear what you all are reading right now. Share in the comments!

Happy Monday and happy reading!

Can’t Wait Wednesday!

https://www.wishfulendings.com/: Can’t Wait Wednesday!

It’s time to talk about the books we can’t wait to read. They don’t have to be new but can be one that you just haven’t gotten around to reading yet. This one is a new book that comes out on June 13th. Rachel Morgan is a favorite fantasy heroine of mine and I love the new direction this author has taken this series.

This is book #17 in the series and there is a TON of back story. If you like light-hearted fantasy novels, you’ll love the Hollows series!

Have a great hump day!
