This Chicks Mid-Year Freak-Out Book Tag and Best reads of 2018 so far…

Wow, is it that time again???? June is here! Well, actually it’s almost gone, but that’s ok! I still have time to do the Mid-Year Freak-Out Book Tag, but because I’ve been tagged by the indomitable, amazingly creative and well, really nice Marie from Drizzle and Hurricane Books, we are putting a little spin on it. I will be talking about the best reads of 2018 so far…

www.thereadingchick.com

Check out Marie’s answers HERE!

Now, I’ll admit, I don’t always read books in the same year they were published, so my books may reflect my laziness, lack of time, and sporadic choices based upon my mood at that moment. What I’m trying to say is that I will talk about the books I’ve read so far this year, but they may not be brand new books from 2018. OK. Confession over.

Here goes…

BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ YET IN 2018

MIdnight Valentine (Adult Contemporary Romance) Midnight Valentine took me completely by surprise, which is why I would pick it over all of the other great books I’ve read this year. It has a big twist in a Sixth Sense sort of way. J.T. Geissinger always writes intense stories, but Midnight Valentine took it to a whole other level.

BEST SEQUEL YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2018

514RZowbbGL._SY346_ (YA Fantasy) It took me forever to get around to reading this second installment in the Rebel of the Sands series. I don’t know why? I loved the first book and maybe was afraid Traitor wouldn’t live up to the first, but in this case the second book was even better. LOVED it.

NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET BUT WANT TO

June Uppercase 4 (YA Contemporary) I just received Saved the Date in an Uppercase Box subscription but haven’t gotten around to it yet. It has a ton of positive hype around it so I hope it’s as good as the press!

MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR

Magic Triumphs (Urban Fantasy) It is definitely Magic Triumphs by Ilona Andrews. This is the last (and 10th) book in the Kate Daniels series. It’s one of my all time favorite Urban Fantasy series and I will absolutely hate to see it end. It also comes out on my birthday. 8/28! Kismet, right?

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

The Hazel Wood (YA Fantasy/Fairy Tale) I’ll preface this by saying that I have definitely read worse books than The Hazel Wood this year. The reason why it’s my biggest disappointment was that I was so disappointed! The hype was so huge, so I didn’t read it right away trying to let all that die down and to try to forget about what I’d heard. When I finally read it, it was just eh. I thought it had such a great premise, was written well, but then the ending sucked. I think I gave it a 3.5? It should’ve been a 3.0 but it started off so well….

BIGGEST SURPRISE

Night Shifts Black (Adult Contemporary Romance) My sister recommended this book to me and she is seldom wrong when it comes to a great romance novel. This was such a surprise because the author leads you astray. You are reading about two characters who you assume are each others love interest. But are they really? I don’t want to spoil the surprise but if you like Rock Star romances you need to read this one.

FAVORITE NEW AUTHOR(s)

Yeah, I know, I picked three. I couldn’t choose! They are all YA authors, two in the contemporary genre and one in the fantasy. I really liked Once and For All. I loved Sarah Dessen’s style of writing and the emotion she imbued in her characters. If there wasn’t one minor flaw this book would’ve receive a 5.0 rating from me. Megan Crewe’s Ruthless Magic was a really fun and energetic fantasy novel. I loved the premise and the authors style. I did give this one a 5.0. Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills was another YA contemporary. The characters in this novel were so well done! It was very diverse and I connected with the main character, which is hard for a middle aged woman to do in this genre! I’d definitely read Emma Mills again.

NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH

From Lukov (Adult Contemporary Romance) I really don’t do crushes, but I did really like Ivan Lukov with Jasmine Santos in From Lukov with Love by Mariana Zapata.

NEWEST FAVORITE CHARACTER

img_1405-1 (YA Fantasy) Brienne from Rebecca Ross’s The Queen’s Rising. She was young and insecure in the beginning but showed great growth. Also, as the heroine you expected her to all of a sudden gain some big power that would make her the hero and save the day. She definitely was a main part of the plot, but didn’t make the choices you’d expect a hero to make. This book kept things real.

BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY

The Air He Breathes (Adult Contemporary) I think Brittainy Cherry tries to make her readers cry? I immediately got the box of tissues out for this one. It was very good. And sad. And emotional.

BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY

Neanderthal (Adult Contemporary Romance) Anything by Penny Reid makes me happy. Her characters are quirky and fun. I always smile when I read their stories.

FAVORITE BOOK TO FILM ADAPTATION

I haven’t read any books that have been adapted to film this year. ☹️

FAVORITE POST YOU HAVE DONE THIS YEAR

I have a very sarcastic sense of humor and I think some of my posts don’t come across in the way I intend them to. I’ve really liked my posts about Annoying Female Heroine Characteristics, and then the reverse post about Male Hero’s, but I think I like my post about YA books and how Young Adults Save the World… and we believe it.

Young Adults Save the World

MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU’VE BOUGHT THIS YEAR

Lake Silence I think it would have to be Anne Bishop’s Lake Silence. I know, it’s not your typical kind of beauty, but it really gives you a hint of the otherworldliness you will be entering when you read this book. Plus the author signed it for me! I had a moment…

WHAT BOOKS DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR

Hero I would really like to finish Alwyn Hamilton’s Rebel of the Sands series. I liked the first two books so much and don’t want to lose that mental momentum!

Iron and Magic I kind of hate this book cover, but am really looking forward to the first book in the Iron Covenant series by Ilona Andrews. How will they take their ultimate evil character Hugh D’Ambray from the Kate Daniels series and make him a hero? I can’t wait to find out!

Midnight Metamorphosis is #free for a limited time on Amazon WORLDWIDE!

If you are a follower of my blog you know that I am also a writer. In April I self published my debut YA Fantasy novel Midnight Metamorphosis. Today I put the ebook up for free on Amazon WORLDWIDE for the next five days.

Why?

I would like people to try out my novel. Read it. Hopefully write a quick review on Amazon.

As a book blogger, you can imagine how scary this feels. I know how subjective our opinions are about the books we read. Not everyone will like it and I am fine with that! Just as many will hopefully love it.

If you are curious if a book reviewer can actually write a piece of fiction, please grab a free copy. You all know how important reviews are on Amazon. If you read Midnight Metamorphosis, please write a quick, honest review. Thanks!

Synopsis:

When her mother died, Avery Anderson finally had a chance to leave a runaway life behind to try to have a normal life. After she moves in with her aunt Brenna and starts her new high school in Dover, California, Avery discovers that she isn’t an average teenage girl. On her sixteenth birthday she’ll inherit a mixture of Elemental and Seer powers. There’s only one problem: at fifteen, she’s already pretty powerful.

Cole Sullivan was transplanted to Dover for a mission-and that mission is Avery. Cole is an Elemental who has trained to be a Guardian, having gained powers over three elements when he was twelve years of age. When Cole befriends Avery, he realizes that guarding her is going to be more difficult than he imagined. With her growing powers, she may be the daughter prophesied to bring about the end of his kind.

When twins Devon and Dani Finn are suddenly enrolled by their father in the same school as Avery with an order to contain her if she’s dangerous, Devon gets suspicious though his sister supports their dad. Devon realizes that he and Avery may have a lot in common through shared talismans that align their powers, and they build a friendship.

Blogger to Blogger Series: An Interview with Marie from Drizzle & Hurricane Books

When I read through my fellow bloggers posts I’m often inspired by their graphics, ideas, books to read, and discussions. When I read Marie’s posts I am all of those things but mostly I’m amazed at the amazing content she produces. I’m sure we all feel like we know Marie pretty well, right? I hope I can learn something new from her answers to these 10 questions.

Blogging is universal and even though we inhabit the same community, we don’t always live in the same country. What country do you live in?

I live in the country of baguettes and croissants (and annoying strikes….), France.

Most blogs have a quirky name and a fun story of origin. Please share the story behind your blogs name?

My blog is called Drizzle & Hurricane Books and I thought my reference here would be obvious, yet apparently it’s not, for many people, so…

I’m a huge fan of John Green’s books and my favorite book is Looking for Alaska. There is a famous quote in that book, about drizzle and hurricanes and… when I was looking for a blog’s name, I actually stumbled upon one of the quotations up on my wall, and saw that one. I thought it’d make a pretty name for a blog and…. when you think about it, some books have the same effects as drizzles, or hurricanes, so… 🙂

Describe where you write your blog.

I usually write my blog posts on my couch at home, either with some tv on the background or just nothing.

Most of us have a stack of books sitting next to our couch or bed waiting to be read. What books are in your stack?

I currently have three books waiting to be read :

Once and For All, A Quiet Kind of Thunder, and Little black dresses, little white lies

Marie's Bookshelf

In case you’d like to check out these books…

A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard

A girl who can’t speak and a boy who can’t hear go on a journey of self-discovery and find support with each other in this gripping, emotionally resonant novel from bestselling author Sara Barnard. Perfect for fans of Morgan Matson and Jandy Nelson.

Steffi doesn’t talk, but she has so much to say.
Rhys can’t hear, but he can listen.

Steffi has been a selective mute for most of her life. The condition’s name has always felt ironic to her, because she certainly does not “select” not to speak. In fact, she would give anything to be able to speak as easily and often as everyone around her can. She suffers from crippling anxiety, and uncontrollably, in most situations simply can’t open her mouth to get out the words.

Steffi’s been silent for so long that she feels completely invisible. But Rhys, the new boy at school, sees her. He’s deaf, and her knowledge of basic sign language means that she’s assigned to help him acclimate. To Rhys, it doesn’t matter that Steffi doesn’t talk. As they find ways to communicate, Steffi discovers that she does have a voice, and that she’s falling in love with the one person who makes her feel brave enough to use it. But as she starts to overcome a lifelong challenge, she’ll soon confront questions about the nature of her own identity and the very essence of what it is to know another person.

Once and For All by Sarah Dessen

Is it really better to have loved and lost? Louna’s summer job is to help brides plan their perfect day, even though she stopped believing in happily-ever-after when her first love ended tragically. But charming girl-magnet Ambrose isn’t about to be discouraged now that he’s met the one he really wants. Maybe Louna’s second chance is standing right in front of her.

Little Black Dresses, Little White Lies by Laura Stampler

Harper Anderson has always thought she should have been born somewhere more glamorous than her sleepy Northern California suburb.

Already resigned to working at a Skinny B’s Juice Press for the summer, Harper is shocked when the ultra-prestigious teen magazine, Shift, calls to say they want her to be their teen dating blogger for the summer. All she needs to do is get her butt to New York in two days.

There’s just one teeny, tiny problem: Apart from some dance floor make-outs, Harper doesn’t have a whole lot of dating experience. So when Shift’s application asked for an “edgy” personal essay, Harper might have misappropriated her best friend’s experiences for her own. But she can just learn on the job…right? Will the house of lies Harper has built around her dream job collapse all around her, or will she be able to fake it until she makes it in the big city?

If you have had a bad day and want to spend an hour reading a book, what is your go to genre or favorite book that will lift your mood?

My go-to genre will always be young adult contemporary – whether it’s to lift up my mood, get me out of a slump or, just, you know, always. I just LOVE contemporaries too much, haha.

When you aren’t blogging, how do you spend your time? Work, Play, School?

I graduated university back in 2016 and I’m currently working full-time. When I’m not, I’m reading, blogging, traveling when I can, watching tv shows and waiting for my next holidays. Or book in the mail.

My favorite blog post banner

What is your favorite blog post you’ve ever written?

This is such a hard question? I think I’d go with my blog post about the struggles of an international blogger, since it’s a topic I hold really close to my heart.

The Struggles of Being an International Book Blogger

Have you ever met one of your favorite authors? If so, what did you say to them? Looking back, what do you wish you had said instead?

I actually had never met any big authors up until earlier this year. I went to the biggest book fair in Paris and got to meet some of my favorite authors of all times: Sarah Dessen, V.E. Schwab and Marissa Meyer.

I kind of said hello and thank you a whole lot, even when there was no need to. Sarah Dessen told me she liked the book I took with me (The Truth About Forever) I said thank you, she said she liked the cover, I said thank you. Now, I’m like, WHY. I asked them about France and if they liked it there, but somehow I wish I could have expressed my love for their books a bit more?! I was just very awkward okay.

Do you have any blogging goals for the next year?

I’m not sure – I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself, even if I love a good goal. I’d love to get more opportunities to work closely with publishers I admire. I’d love to help bloggers more. Most importantly though, I’d love to RELAX about blogging and just be chill and happy with what I put out there. And keep on loving it 🙂

If you could sit down with an author for a slice of cake and a question,  who is the author, what kind of cake would you serve, and what is the first question you’d ask?

My favorite author of all times is John Green so, obviously I’d love to sit with him and have a slice of cake. I’d have chocolate cake, because it’s my favorite, but I have absolutely NO idea what the hell I would ask him, I’d probably be in shock or something. To be honest and practical, I’m thinking the first thing out of my mouth would be “how are you”.

Thanks Marie, so much for agreeing to answer my questions! FYI, I just read Sarah Dessen’s book myself, and it was very good! (review soon!) I am probably the only person who has not read any of John Green’s novels, but on your recommendation I may have to pick one up!

Has anyone else read any of the books on Marie’s bookshelf? If you’re a fan of John Green, which book is your favorite?

Thanks for reading my Blogger to Blogger post!

Deb

Friday YA: Once and for All by Sarah Dessen

Louna is working her final summer before she goes off to college as an assistant in her mothers bridal planning business. Growing up in the midst of bridal madness has given her a rather jaded view of true love and the one relationship she’d had ended tragically. When she spots Ambrose, the gorgeous son of a client, she distantly notes his looks but is disgusted with his laissez faire attitude towards life as she has to reign him in to walk his mother down the aisle. He is a fly in the ointment of her life, and she is the challenge he is determined to win. When her mother hires him for the summer, Louna’s animosity towards Ambrose disappears but she is still afraid to let go and live.

Once and for All took me on a journey into a world of love, loss and friendship. Louna’s one and only love ended abruptly and because she never had the chance to conclude this teenage love she doesn’t know how to move on. When she meets Ambrose she is just disgusted by his good looks, charm, and easy goingness (is that a word?). However, she soon begins to admire that same casual charm. The same things that aggravate  her day to day he seems to deal with effortlessly and with a smile on his face. Finally, of course, women LOVE him. He dates multiple women at a time and Louna only goes out when dragged and set up by her best friend. Then one day, standing in line to get coffee, they make a bet. She needs to become a serial dater and he needs to have a relationship for seven weeks. Winner gets to pick the next date for the loser.

I liked so many things about this story! We take a parallel journey with Louna as she remembers her previous boyfriend and as she starts to live her life again dating. The use of flashbacks effectively delivered the color of Louna’s emotions in the past as a direct contrast to the dull gray emotional world she is living in now. As she learns to move on her world slowly builds in color until Bam! she realizes how she truly feels about Ambrose and how wonderful life is while living it fully. It was very deftly done, and a really enjoyable novel to read.

I want to talk Ambrose for a minute. Did anyone else really dislike him for the first two thirds of the book? I’ll admit, when I started reading I didn’t read the synopsis so I wasn’t sure he was her love interest. It took me a long while to see through that persona into the depths of him. Once I looked hard, I understood where the book was going and then read the synopsis to make sure I was right. Yep! But, I’ll admit I was worried!

There were some other great characters in this book. I loved William, the gay father figure with a spine of steel, her best friend Jilly the oldest sister and wrangler to a million little brothers and sisters, and her mom who went through her own metamorphosis right along with her daughter. I understand why this book touched the hearts of so many people and received great reviews. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

This Chick Read: Rhythm, Chord & Malykhin by Mariana Zapata

Gaby Barreto doesn’t know what she’s going to do with the rest of her life. She just finished college and her boyfriend broke up with her. When her twin brother calls from the road to ask if she’ll come on tour and sell their merchandise for them she says yes and gets on a plane to live in a bus with her brother Eli and his two bandmates. Oh yeah, she’ll also live on the bus with 4 more guys from another band. Gaby has always been fun, funny and one of the guys, but when she meets Sacha Malykhin she wants that friend zone to turn into something else but she’s determined to play it cool.

Gaby is that girl you’ve always wanted to be. Self assured, funny and pretty. The girl that everyone is comfortable around. She grew up listening to her brothers music and has even toured with their band before back in the days when they got around in a beat up bus. I loved her camaraderie with all of the guys, but especially with Sacha. She had just broken up with her boyfriend but when she and Sacha meet there’s laughter and a twinkle to their connection. It just seems to be really easy for them. Even though they don’t get together for a really long time, you can tell that the connection between them, even as friends is real.

This is not your typical rock star romance. There isn’t any drama (well only a tiny bit) and there’s tons of laughter. These people really don’t have a lot of baggage. Maybe that’s why I could relate to them so well? They were an easy couple to see together. I also really enjoyed Gaby’s interactions with all the other guys on the bus, especially Eli and Mason. Eli is her twin so they have that special connection, but Mason is that brother from another mother. He was hysterical!  I’d love to see him have his own story, but he’ll probably have to live in my fantasies instead. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❣️

This Chick Read: Vampire’s Faith (Dark Protectors #8) by Rebecca Zanetti

Vampire’s Faith is the eighth book in the Dark Protectors series, but is really the first book in it’s own series, also set in the Dark Protectors world. Ronan Kayrs was sacrificed to live in an alternate dimension that was supposed to last for an eternity. His sacrifice was part of a key that would hold the ultimate enemy. When Ronan wakes in a hospital, he realizes his part of the containment has collapsed, and that evil is closer to being released back into this world. However, there is a bright side for Ronan. When he awakes he also sets sight on the woman he has been dreaming of for centuries, his mate Dr. Faith Cooper.

The Dark Protectors series is my favorite of Rebecca Zanetti’s. It uses the time honored theme of good vs evil, but with a paranormal twist. Vampire’s Faith adds another twist in that Ronan is a King from centuries ago. His brothers descendants are the current time Kayrs family who rules their vampire nation and are the heroes of the earlier books in this series. A clever way to tie the stories together and keep this thrilling series alive.

I had a really easy time enjoying Ronan. When he entered the story he was kind of goofy, after all he was dropped into current technology, clothing, etc. He was charming and self deprecating as he wooed his mate. As the story moved forward, he became more demanding and reverted to the “I am male therefore you should listen to me” ways of the past. Luckily Faith was not going along with his program. It made for a tension filled  love story where both of their eyes were being opened to unusual things and they had to rely on each other to be their anchor in an unfamiliar world. The highlight was that the attraction between the two was sizzling and their passion jumped off the pages.

Where I felt the story slow down was when the Kurjans and Cyst were bigger players in a scene. I guess I needed a little more back story for this hidden sect that showed up all of a sudden as the big evil was closer to being released. I’m sure their part in this story will get fleshed out a little more in the next novel, which looks to be a good one. The story set up nicely at the end of this book to tantalize the reader.

If you love paranormal romances this series is great. You can start with book #8 and jump right in, but to get a better picture of this world start at the beginning with Fated. It’s one of my favorites in the series. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for my honest review and it was honest.

This Chicks Sunday Commentary: Uppercase Box June’18 Reveal

HI everyone! I am really excited about this months book and can’t wait to show you what it was! However, as you know, we have some other bookish gifts to reveal first.

June Uppercase

First, here’s a look at the bag. Can you guess it? No? Too bad! It was filled to the brim with goodies.

June Uppercase 2

For those of us who love Harry Potter…. from Juniper & Ivy Designs Harry’s owl Hedwig and the envelope with Harry’s submission into Hogwarts!  OK, I’m guessing that’s what’s in the envelope because, well, it doesn’t actually open. Does Harry receive any other envelopes besides that one? Let me know in the comments! It’s been awhile since I’ve read the series.

June Uppercase 3

An Invictus poem bookmark by Ink & Wonder. I love these wooden bookmarks. I believe this is the second one we’ve received in an Uppercase Box, isn’t it? I will definitely use this as I do NOT turn down the corners of pages!  Shame, shame if you do!

You can also see the little note we receive every month from Lisa, the owner (and fellow book blogger) of Uppercase. There’s a hint to the title if you can see it, but not long to wait now!  Drumroll please!

June Uppercase 4

I am loving that the book this month is Save the Date by Morgan Matson. I am in line for it at the library and now have my own signed copy! I also received some Save the Date wedding stickers, which are sweet but will be passed on as a giftee to someone else as I don’t really use stickers…

Save The Date by Morgan Matson (synopsis)

Charlie Grant’s older sister is getting married this weekend at their family home, and Charlie can’t wait—for the first time in years, all four of her older siblings will be under one roof. Charlie is desperate for one last perfect weekend, before the house is sold and everything changes. The house will be filled with jokes and games and laughs again. Making decisions about things like what college to attend and reuniting with longstanding crush Jesse Foster—all that can wait. She wants to focus on making the weekend perfect.

The only problem? The weekend is shaping up to be an absolute disaster.

There’s the unexpected dog with a penchant for howling, house alarm that won’t stop going off, and a papergirl with a grudge.

There are the relatives who aren’t speaking, the (awful) girl her favorite brother brought home unannounced, and a missing tuxedo.

Not to mention the neighbor who seems to be bent on sabotage and a storm that is bent on drenching everything. The justice of the peace is missing. The band will only play covers. The guests are all crazy. And the wedding planner’s nephew is unexpectedly, distractingly…cute.

Over the course of three ridiculously chaotic days, Charlie will learn more than she ever expected about the family she thought she knew by heart. And she’ll realize that sometimes, trying to keep everything like it was in the past means missing out on the future.

I can’t wait to read it, look for my review soon!

Until next Sunday,

Deb

Blogger to Blogger Series: An Interview with Donna from Heron There & Everywhere

This week on my Blogger to Blogger series I want to highlight a blog that I have enjoyed following called Heron There & Everywhere. Donna’s blog posts are very eclectic, filled with book reviews and commentary about her everyday life. There may even be a couple of posts about her friendly neighborhood squirrel thrown in for good measure. Donna and I share a love for rock star romances and the author Mariana Zapata. We have even hosted a blog book club reviewing Ms. Zapata’s book Kulti (still one of my all time faves!). I have come to appreciate Donna’s discussions about her own life, learning to live with my own struggles while watching a blogger friend go through her own. If you haven’t ever visited Donna’s blog, please do! You’ll come to appreciate her honesty and taste in good books just as I have!

Click this link to visit her blog! Heron There & Everywhere

Here are Donna’s answers to my 10 questions.

Blogging is universal and even though we inhabit the same community, we don’t always live in the same country. What country do you live in?
Donna: I live in the United States. I was born and raised in upstate New York (Rochester). I’ve been here my entire life, never lived anywhere else, and never really wanted to.
What is the view outside your front door?
The view outside my front door is a little forlorn these days. My twenty-three year old “squirrel tree” is no more. It had split down the middle and had to go. All that’s left is a pile of wood chips and the sunflowers sprouting from the seeds the squirrels had buried around the tree trunk. At least I have the flowers as a cheery reminder of the sweet squirrels who used to sit on my front step. (I still have the squirrels – fewer in number – they’re out in the backyard now).
Donna's Yard
Most blogs have a quirky name and a fun story of origin. Please share the story behind your blogs name?
Heron There & Everywhere comes from the saying “here, there and everywhere”. My blog was always meant to be a bit of a mixed bag. It was originally ‘Reflections from a Middle Aged Lady’ on the Blogger platform. It was merely my random thoughts and observations. My book review blog and squirrel blog were separate blogs (and I’ve since folded them all into one). I got my first tattoo (a heron) because they are my favorite bird. When I moved to WordPress and set up my domain, my husband suggested the play on words because I love herons, and I wanted to show that I was going to write about a little bit of everything.
Describe where you write your blog. Include a picture if you’d like!
Believe it or not, I write most often on my phone. I jot down ideas in the notes app on my iPhone as they come to me. That way I don’t lose the thought while it’s fresh, and I can either cut and paste it into the WordPress app on my phone or on my Mac desktop.
Most of us have a stack of books sitting next to our couch or bed waiting to be read. What books are in your stack? (Include a photo if you’d like!)
I’ve pretty much switched over to all kindle books. I have books on shelves in my room, but I’m not currently reading any of them. Here’s a screenshot (or two) from the Kindle app on my phone. (My iPhone is my best friend).
Donna's Kindleoooh boy this is a lot of books! Let’s just pick a couple to get a feel for them…
The Copper Smith Farm House by Devney Perry

One old farmhouse brought them together. It could also tear them apart.

Gigi has just uprooted her whole world to start a new life. The unexpected gift of a farmhouse in small-town Montana is just what she and her daughter need to escape big-city loneliness. The last thing she needs is attitude from the town’s sheriff, the most perfectly attractive and ruggedly handsome man she’s ever laid eyes on—and a complete jerk.

Jess knows all about women like Gigi. Beautiful. Sexy. Scheming. She’s stolen his sanctuary, the farmhouse that should have been his. But along with a face full of freckles, she’s got a sharp wit and a backbone of steel—something he doesn’t discover until after making a complete fool of himself. If he can earn back her trust and win her heart, he might just find the home he’s always needed.

Atticus: A Woman’s Journey with the World’s Worst Behaved Dog by Sawyer Bennett

A heart-warming and deliciously funny story about the world’s worst behaved dog and how he trained his human how to love herself again.

Through the haze of vodka and self-loathing, Hazel Roundtree saw the poor creature lying in a ditch.

One brown eye. One blue.
Covered in mud and crying from pain, the puppy was desperately trying to free itself from a hopeless situation.

She almost kept walking by. She had her own problems and besides… no one had ever stopped to help her.

Who we’re ultimately meant to be is a journey without end, but there’s always a defined start…

Hazel had no idea the dog would be her beginning, her second chance, the miracle she never saw coming. She named him Atticus. He grew up to be a very bad–and completely awesome–dog. He took Hazel on a life-changing journey filled with mischievous adventure and painful heartbreak. In the end, Hazel grew up to be completely awesome, too.

Night Shifts Black by Alyson Santos

His name is Luke. But nobody knows that. He was an iconic musician before he gave up music. But nobody knows that either. They also don’t know he’s twenty-seven, that he used to have an infectious laugh, and that he’s way too young to be widowed. They certainly don’t know the rest of his tragic story. All they know is that he comes into their café at the same time every morning and stares at the same chair at the same table. They know he’s strange. They know he interrupts their breakfast with a cold blast of air as he hovers in the doorway, mustering the courage to confront a piece of furniture.

No one asks why. No one cares. He’s fine with that. He’s done with life. This isn’t even his story anymore. It’s actually Callie’s, the young writer who sat in his chair one day.

This novel is a work of fiction and intended for mature readers. Events and persons depicted are of a fictional nature and use language, make choices, and face situations inappropriate for younger readers. Please note this book also addresses the issues of depression and suicide in a compassionate, realistic manner. This book can be read as a standalone, but the story continues in Tracing Holland.

If you have had a bad day and want to spend an hour reading a book, what is your go to genre or favorite book that will lift your mood?
I read mostly contemporary romances, and I’m still trying to write the same. I really have to be in the mood to read, and then I devour everything in sight. Right now I’m going through a non-reading stage. It happens every so often. I don’t often re-read books, but one series I have read more than once is Kylie Scott’s Stage Dive series. That series just really did it for me.

When you aren’t blogging, how do you spend your time? Work, Play, School?
I work full-time plus (I’ve been working a lot of overtime) as an Administrator at a large law firm in the Intellectual Property department. I handle patents and trademarks. I work on my drafts of romance novels pretty much non-stop in my spare time. I’m also learning how to play electric guitar. I just bought an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro model. I love my guitar. I also listen to lots of rock and metal music.

What is your favorite blog post you’ve ever written? Please include the link!
This was a difficult question to answer! The posts I like usually don’t get much love from others. And posts I’m only so-so about get lots of traffic and likes. My review of Kulti by Mariana Zapata was one of the most fun to do because I did the review in concert with two other bloggers. Two of us loved the book; the third reviewer hated it! That was a real surprise. But there again, this post only got five likes.
I’ve learned to write and post what I like and not to worry about what others might think reading it. I write for me.
Have you ever met one of your favorite authors? If so, what did you say to them? Looking back, what do you wish you had said instead?
No, sadly not many authors come through Rochester, and I’m not a big traveler so I don’t get to see them at book conventions or big city bookstores. I’m more of a rockstar fangirl. That started in the early 1980’s. I stood outside a record store in the rain for about an hour to try to meet Motley Crue when they opened for Ozzy Osborne. Sadly before my cousin and I even got close to the door, the in-store autograph session was over and both bands had left.
I did do a meet and greet with country music singer, Trace Adkins years ago in Mentor, Ohio. I remember telling him I’d seen him three times that summer and he said, “Man, you must be getting bored!”
This coming September I’ve signed up for a meet and greet in York, Pennsylvania with Alice Cooper’s guitarist, Ryan Roxie. I plan to tell him I’m taking his online beginner guitar lessons! I thought that would be cool. I can’t wait to meet him!
If you could sit down with an author for a slice of cake and a question, who is the author, what kind of cake would you serve, and what is the first question you’d ask?
It would be JK Rowling and chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. I’d like to ask her why she chose to write that awful Casual Vacancy book! It was so vulgar and disappointing after Harry Potter! It was as if she chose to write the exact opposite of what she was known for just to shock people. I’d love to know the real story behind that one. I suppose we should be glad she’s still writing, even if it’s not my cup of tea anymore.

You can really get a flavor for how eclectic Donna’s blog is by the answers to her questions!  I’ll admit, I’ve already purchased the first book in the Stage Dive series she mentions above. I love a great Rock Star romance! LOL
Donna mentions her own love for Rock and Roll and meeting a few rock stars. It brought back memories of my own most famous rock star moment with Gene Simmons from KISS at a convention. He asked to take a picture with me and my friend Sheri, also blonde. As he had his arms around the two of us and was smiling for the camera, he asked us if we’d kiss each other. LOL. Yikes!
Feel free to share your own Rock Star moment, even if it’s just in your own imagination! LOL
Thanks for reading!

Friday YA: Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett

Starry eyes weaves the story of Zorie and Lennon. Two ex best friends who decided to take their relationship to the next level. Sounds pretty simple, right? It should be but family drama, miscommunication, and teenage emotions cause Zorie and Lennon’s relationship to shift from young love to not speaking. When the two of them get stranded camping they find their way out of the wilderness and back into each others hearts. I read very few teen romances but this story was very well done and I was intrigued by all of the different aspects of these characters. Zorie and Lennon were as unique as their names and Jenn Bennett’s Starry Eyes an intelligently written vehicle for their story.

This was my first Jenn Bennett novel and was rather surprised by the adult subject matter. Lennon has been raised by two moms who own an adult sex shop. As wild and crazy as that may sound the scenes in the shop were subtle yet filled with humor. Most of the early emotional drama came from Zorie’s father who hates Lennon and his parents. As the novel goes on we are clued into the why’s and wherefore’s but in the beginning this hatred seems filled with bigotry.  Zorie’s emotional growth is displayed by the way she deals with her father and his irrational anger and marital problems with her step mother. Also, I feel I should give a warning, the teens in this book are all sexually active which I guess is not uncommon today but I found myself trying to double check their ages a couple of times. At times I forgot I was reading a YA novel, so if you have kids, be aware of the adult content.

Lennon was a perfect blend of nerdy cool. He had two moms, worked in a snake shop and had a b-level rock star for a father. What’s not to like? Even though the novel was written from Zorie’s perspective you could feel Lennon’s emotions and really identify with his character. I can totally see YA readers being easily captivated by him.

I really enjoyed this novel in large part because of all of the surprises revealed through the story, but also because of the unique setting. Most of the novel takes place while Zorie and Lennon are hiking through the wilderness. Seeing nature and the night’s sky through their Starry Eyes almost made me want to pack a bag and a book and go on a hike. Almost. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

This Chick Read: Awakened by Fire (Dragons of Bloodfire #2) by Erin Kellison

Samantha Vine is home to see her grandfather and to be a reluctant bridesmaid in her cousin’s wedding. She hasn’t been home for years because it’s hard for her to hide what she is, and if she gets found out both she and her grandfather’s lives will be forfeit. She is a Tempus, someone who can travel through time. She was saved as an infant by her grandfather who fed her the blood of Warrick Voclain, dragon and Bloodkin Triad member, an act that also created her Tempus status. Samantha’s family has always served the Voclain’s and when she finds out that her grandfather and Warrick are in danger she stays in New York to go back through time to find out who is trying to harm them.

Warrick is a very strong dragon and when Samantha uses her magic in his presence he knows immediately what she has done. It’s against the law, but she has done it to help him which intrigues him.  After putting her own life in danger, he falls prey to the attraction they feel for each other and is willing to lay his life on the line so that she can keep hers.

I read the first novel in this series a couple of years ago and immediately purchased the second intending to read it immediately. Of course, time got away from me but this weekend I saw it on my kindle and picked it up. Wow, it was good! Even though the cover has the whole naked chest thing going on (not my favorite type of cover) this book had a great plot. It was a mystery first and relationship building story second. I loved how the author took her time to let the reader get to know these characters and let the characters get re-acquainted with each other. By the time the two of them became romantic I was all in, rooting for him to forget the fact she was human and her to also give his dragon brooding self a chance. There was a lot of action, fight scenes, and subterfuge with the romance lifting the story to the next level. A very fun weekend read! I will  definitely not wait as long to pick up the third novel in the series.
