This Chick’s Audio Review: Who Slays the Wicked (Sebastian St. Cyr #14) by C.S. Harris

When Lord Ashworth is murdered, Bow Street calls upon Sebastian, Viscount Devlin, to help investigate the crime. Ashworth was a suspect in one of Sebastian’s previous cases involved the torture and killing of multiple street urchins, but he could never prove his case. When his niece marries Ashworth and delivers him twin sons, she is removed to his father’s estate so Ashworth can continue his deviance in peace at his home. While investigating, clues lead to a woman as being a prime suspect and Sebastian hopes that it is not his niece Stephanie.

I have listened to every single book in this series to date and am a huge fan of the narrator, Davina Porter. I can’t imagine the details she needs to keep in her head to provide different voices for multiple characters, continuously, while also speaking in accents from multiple countries and sound like both men and women. Her talent astounds me and knowing that she has retired, I’m not looking forward to the first book I listen to where she isn’t the narrator, although I know that I will love the story just as much as usual.

When you are as invested as I am in this series, reading fourteen books to date, you have seen all of the characters evolve and grow. I have my favorites and lesser favorites, and have now seen Lord Ashworth, a truly heinous character, get his comeuppance. I liked the story and the mix of true historical notes mixed with fiction, in this case the visit of the Russian princess and the political machinations involved in the marriage of the Regent’s daughter Charlotte. I find all of the history fascinating and how this author uses these true notes to build a credible plot that reads like the truth. C.S. Harris is truly a formidable author with a lot of talent. I wondered how long she’d been plotting Ashworth’s death, and how many books ahead she is when setting things in motion in previous novels. It’s mind-boggling!

This mystery held both personal notes for Sebastian, as well as the investigation being a true test of his skills. We learned more about the inner workings of the upper echelon of society and how messed up they all truly are. I blew through this audiobook, enjoying every tidbit revealed and wondering how it will come into play later. As soon as I have my next book credit, I’ll be purchasing book #15 ! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
