I don’t even know what number book this is in the In Death series, and I don’t care.  I will always buy, borrow or steal a copy and read it as soon as it comes out!  Luckily, I didn’t have to steal a copy, I checked it out on my Overdrive library app.  Fans of Nora Roberts, aka J.D Robb, never have to wait too long for another book in this series to come out.  She delivers about two a year, and mixed in with all of the other Nora Roberts books she releases every year, we are kept happy and reading.

Eve and Roarke are tied for first with Jamie and Claire from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series as my favorite romantic duo.  Unlike Outlander, the In Death series is set in the not too distant future.  Eve, a fast food, soda drinking Lieutenant in the NYPD, has been married to Roarke for three years, and he is still trying to get her to eat better and get more rest.  Well, that didn’t happen in this book.  Eve catches another case, this time her father figure and secret crush Professor Mira is right in the middle of the mystery.

In the last few books, Eve’s cases have struck very close to home, bringing back unwelcome memories of her childhood trauma at the hands of her father.  This case also had Eve facing her past, and it became a catalyst to her opening herself up to her friends.  We saw a more emotional Eve than we have seen in the past.  There were quite a few scenes that I will admit had me sniffling into a Kleenex.  I think Eve will always be a conflicted woman, solving cases, speaking for the victims.  What I am hoping is that we will now see Eve move on a little, heal and think to the future.  Roarke would make an amazing father, and Eve a really good mother.  I’m not sure if J.D. Robb will ever take us in that direction, but every time I pick up a book, I hope that this will be the one!  The author does such a great job of mixing in some comedy, amidst the horror of a murder case, a pregnant Eve would provide a new kind of humor and, I think, help Eve continue on in her evolution.  Her name is Eve after all!

If you have not read this series, the first book is Naked in Death.  Buy, borrow or steal this book!  Brotherhood in Death is #37-38 or something like that.  It doesn’t matter.  What matters is that you will have, weeks, months or years of fantastic reading in front of you.  If you, like me, are a big fan, and have been sitting on your butt and have forgotten this book was coming out, GET IT!  It’s awesome!
